2025 Fediverse Needs Assessment: Moderation Across the Social Web The Fediverse is more than Mastodon, and moderation is bigger than any one platform. Last year, we heard from moderators on Mastodo…

I think the #Ghost and #Wordpress federations pose interesting questions about what #fediverse platforms can and should be. Do we actually want blogs and feeds of blogs folded into a mastodon/microblog social feed? Do we want to read and comment on blogs on mastodon? Do we want all the diversity of the fediverse fed into a single platform's UI and hope that it works well? Are we worried that some choices by our platform or instance admin might hinder this process? I'm rather skeptical. 1/
Mastodon creator shares what went wrong with Threads and ponders the future of the fediverse
In a wide-ranging interview with Eugen Rochko, creator of the decentralized social network Mastodon, Rochko shared why Threads federation fell flat, why ActivityPub and ATProto will likely never merge, and what it will take to grow the fediverse.

Mastodon Status Check
My social-media life has been Fediverse-first for a year now. I stick my head into Bluesky and Threads regularly, but visit Twitter rarely if at all. This piece takes a close look at Mastodon-land as things stand in late summer 2023. What’s working, what’s not, what are the alternatives? The many branches of the Fediverse
As more and more people are asking me about Mastodon I felt a need for a picture to point at, showcasing how the software known as Mastodon fits into the much larger concept of the Fediverse. I made this infographic to help myself and others explain the many different use-

Mastodon and federation
The more I read about Mastodon promoters' opinions on how it should work, the more I think, "How could you possibly think that is how it is going to go?" One group of people want a Federated Feed Reader: They want to read the clever updates and memes from their friends and favorite celebrities. They want to post a GIF and have their friends validate them by hitting "like" on it. They want to ...
Mastodon and the Fediverse is too noisy. Why?
Mastodon and most Fediverse platforms may be better than traditional social networks at interoperability but they don’t do much about other issues. In fact, they largely copy these issues straight from the social media giants. Most Fediverse platforms, including Mastodon, publicly display follower counts, like (favorite) counts, and share
The fediverse is an opportunity learned societies can’t ignore - LSE Impact
Björn Brembs argues that learned societies should lead developments on federated social media platforms, such as Mastodon.

On the coordination for better moderation systems
There is a need for better moderation systems on the fediverse. But getting people to coordinate to build and adopt such systems is proving to be a challenge.

FR#158 – What is Mastodon for?
On AI and place, and how Mastodon gives tools to create communities at the instance level, but people experience 'place' at the federation level.

Moderation is an unsolved problem. Fascism & transphobia prosper in parts of Mastodon. There’s no support to deal with this. The hardest part is funding. It relies on community funding for server costs. There’s also a huge amount of work to be done around the scenes, moderating and fixing problems.
Why we discontinued our Mastodon server
gfsc.communityTried building on Mastodon, wasn't financially viable. There's extremely little will to pay people for work in the fediverse, and Mastodon couldn't even give credit to contributors to help them raise their own profile. The only Fediverse orgs that have paid me are IFTAS and Nivenly.
