NO MORE INVITES TO THE COOKOUT. AT Protocol Personal Data Server operated by Blacksky Algorithms.
Anniversary
Blacksky Algorithms turns one. Announcing blacksky.cash for private payments and blacksky.tech for one-click server hosting on AT Protocol. Launching 2026.

PDS — a teaching port of the Bluesky personal data server
A from-scratch reimplementation of the Bluesky PDS in TanStack Start, paired with tutorial chapters that explain each subsystem so you can build your own.
BlackSky Algorithms - Tektite Migration Service
Migrate your ATProto account to BlackSky PDS - A decentralized tool for creating safe, independent online spaces.

Blacksky As a Service: a First Look at Acorn - AT Protocol
Rishi Balakrishnan joins to talk about the work that went into building Acorn, Blacksky's new platform for creating moderated communities on atproto — and why the landing page never mentions a PDS.

Bluesky PDS | brad.quest
Bluesky is built on the open ATProto “atmosphere” network. The Personal Data Server is the network unit that serves as a repository for user data, identity, and media on the network.
Self-hosting - AT Protocol
Self-hosting a Bluesky PDS means running your own Personal Data Server that is capable of federating with the wider ATProto network.

Why (@why.bsky.team)
↩️ reply to Why (@why.bsky.team): We wanted to design things so you could hypothetically run your own pds that comes online only once a week to send its content to the network and still have that be meaningful participation

Overview
What is Blacksky? Blacksky Algorithms is building the future of self-governable online communities with tools that make complex infrastructure simple to deploy. Most social platforms control what users see, how communities operate, and who gets to feel safe online. Blacksky changes that by providing one-click infrastructure for independent, self-governed digital spaces. Our platform lets communities […]

Every time you view or like a post or take most actions on Bluesky or Blacksky your requests go through your Personal Data Server (PDS). It’s also the home of all your data. To date, we’ve used other people’s software to run Blacksky’s fleet of PDS. In the next week we’ll be migrating to our own.
How can a lay person "own their data" if they have no idea what a PDS is and that they are granted authority over that server and it's data? The idea that they only need to know about "credible exit" if bluesky becomes hostile plays right into the computationally passive cycle we live in.
𝕮
”The distinction between programmer and user is reinforced and maintained by a tech industry that benefits from a population rendered computationally passive. If we accept and adopt the role of less agency, we then make it harder for ourselves to come into more agency.”
Blacksky was one of the 1st PDSs to allow open sign ups We are also now the largest PDS deployment that doesn't run any of bsky's code Sorry for the turbulence. It was the one-time price to pay for being able to build features like private accounts or sign-in via phone number w/o waiting on Bluesky
The blacksky.community web application now uses our own API servers to load posts, timelines and profiles. When data is missing (accounts on the edges of the network, outside of our primary community, etc) we leverage @microcosm.blue
