a few atproto tools which made it easier to cryptographically verify individual records would make it matter less where records live and we could move away from a single-PDS world for use-cases which don't need universe-scale state (not saying go full Nostr, just thinking on a happy medium)

At first I thought it was yet another lexicon to wrap data on, but it's a way for anyone to use ATProto as a discovery mechanism for their non-PDS-hosted datasets. I hadn't thought of the ATmosphere and the relays as a way to surface arbitrary existing data until know.

This is a radically different idea than the advocacy I’ve seen for “data portability” and ”data sovereignty”. It’s a *restructuring* of power rather than small adjustments to existing structures. atproto and local-first, both in their own ways, demonstrate what such a restructuring can look like.
