I'm building on atproto because I think that a single social network has essentially no shot of dethroning the current tech monopolies. But an open ecosystem of interoperating apps is so infinitely more interesting than legacy social that it seems almost inevitable it will win

Can everyone building on atproto please answer this question? 😇

Why I'm betting on ATProto (and why you should, too)
Social media was supposed to connect us, but most of it has turned into ads, division, and loneliness. I'm betting on ATProto as a way to fix that, and not just for developers. Whether you're a scientist, journalist, or just someone who wants the internet to feel human again, I think ATProto matters for you too.
The promise of ATproto is social media without corporate overlords | The Web Dev Podcast Series 1
Developers building apps on ATproto, the technology behind social media apps like Bluesky and Leaflet, are promising us a future where we own our content and aren’t at the whims of a tiny handful of companies. Software engineer Zeu Capua talks to host Jason Lengstorf about the promise of social media where we can actually own our own data.

Build decentralized social media with ATproto
Rewilding the internet with ATProto
So far, many of the projects in the ATProtocol ecosystem have focused on bringing parity—making projects that replicate our existing tools and platforms, but with the affordances of the protocol instead. That's cool and we need to do that, but I think we can go much farther, and take this opportunity to challenge some of the biggest assumptions of what the modern internet is for, who builds it, and how we interact with it. This talk is in conversation with several of the talks from last year, and in I'll argue that we'll never get away from skeuomorphism until we've fundamentally changed the definition of what "the social internet" means in the first place.
For anyone building new apps and tools on ATproto that are … 🌐 on the Open Web 🌱 past the prototype stage ✨ reimagining the social internet New_ Public, @publicspaces.net and @waag.org are investing up to €10,000 in alternatives to Big Tech Learn more, share, or apply by May 1st newpublic.org/OSA
Open Social Awards | New_ Public
newpublic.orgthis is, I think, the path to atproto victory: social platforms have become samey network effect vehicles that exist only to copy each others' features, so all atproto has to do is build a large enough network effect of its own that it can absorb closed socials' features in the same way
norvid_studies
one thing is it seems there's a lot more fast copying for eg every 'social' thing converging on shortform video / all kind of looking like each other but with their existing users. this is a very anecdotal impression though
I love that the design of atproto was in part inspired by big social Kafka and ScyllaDB server backends and @martin.kleppmann.com's Designing Data-Intensive Applications and the community immediately used it to implement thousands of apps with no backend lol
Atmosphere social client apps should make it easier to broadcast beyond the protocol. Ex. In-app mirroring tools for Threads, X, and other microblogging platforms. As well as having post scheduling. Let people share across the social internet, but make sure ATproto feels like home base.
Some of us in the ActivityPub world feel jealous of AtProto’s success (like me). But more decentralization is a win for everyone. With Bridgy from @anew.social connecting protocols, this isn’t competition, it’s momentum. We’re stronger together, so let’s build the social web humanity deserves 🚀
Private Social Networks on atproto
Building toward something more like Facebook on atproto (not Facebook Groups, not Marketplace, just *private* content from people you follow.
