not to get too ahead of some other stuff i'm working on but i think every news org should be able to build experiences like this that they own via atproto. once permissioned data lands you can tie in business models really well. "substack on atproto" is too narrow, we can do better.

Was just scrolling our homepage revchron feed and caught the same vibe as when I was myself a hardcore Engadget reader in 2006ish. So happy with this, so much more to come

ATmosphere technology to support organizing and activism
There has been some good writing by Mosh, Erlend, and Meri about this topic worth pulling in. Permissioned spaces coming to atproto will also unlock a lot of important affordances for crafting protected spaces for organizers. For example, permissioned spaces on semble would turn into community-run search engines. My hope is that atproto is the missing infrastructural piece that enables us to really shape digital spaces around the specific needs organizers and their communities rather the...

Exploring business models for atproto and the open social web
App creator pledges against enshittification
While researching business models that could work on atproto there are some obvious ones that won’t work on a technical/architectural level. Like you can’t really monetize the data in the PDS because it’s all completely open (as long as there’s no permissioned data, but probably not even after that). That in itself already takes away a lot of room/incentive for enshittification (which is great), since when you do users can create or move to another app. But still, I kept encountering models/ta...

Build decentralized social media with ATproto
Lexicon Embeds Overview
ATProto’s inside out structure provides an opportunity for open, permissionless building on top of any component in the network, including its extensible data schema definition system, Lexicons. One of the opportunities this presents is users sharing their data and records with multiple apps. Those apps may be direct substitutions (different clients for microblogging say), or apps that use that data in a variety of ways, such as Popfeed an app which aggregates posts about a variety of media ty...

The promise of ATproto is social media without corporate overlords | The Web Dev Podcast Series 1
Developers building apps on ATproto, the technology behind social media apps like Bluesky and Leaflet, are promising us a future where we own our content and aren’t at the whims of a tiny handful of companies. Software engineer Zeu Capua talks to host Jason Lengstorf about the promise of social media where we can actually own our own data.
ATProto ideas
If AT Protocol becomes “a meaningful layer of the web” — even if it’s only tens of millions of users — then the winning ideas probably won’t only be futuristic...
This could be very relevant for funding the atproto ecosystem, especially once private data is supported ifp.org/unlocking-a-... "The challenge is not data scarcity, but rather barriers to ... utilizing existing high-quality data resources." also see associated funding call ifp.org/rfp-launch/
Unlocking a Million Times More Data for AI | IFP
ifp.orgI wrote my first #atproto community discourse topic. Pretty simple idea, but can be a good groundwork for private data, group-owned data or off-protocol data.

discourse.atprotocol.communityDoing some investigation into news data on atproto via @sill.social's appview. The most popular news orgs that don't have an account tied to their domain are: ABC, BBC, CBC. Broadcasting companies hate atproto, you heard it here first.
Early on in my time here I was sketching out a Bandcamp alternative hosted on the ATmosphere. The necessary affordances weren't there to make the market work (private data), but there was also not a way to get funding to build it because there is no moat or ROI. The data model is open, competition

I've been talking about this for months with others. SaaS products built around data moats are not a thing in the Atmosphere. The whole point is that users data should not be enclosed. This is a space that requires other types of business models.
This approach to a data commons could extend to so many typically shared things. For businesses to easily and authoritatively publish things like open hours or product catalogs, discographies, every kind of -ography... creative appmakers could do so much with all that
