Don't skip the ground star of anise (I put 2). I have an old cheap Krups grinder that I use as a spice grinder ever since I bought a burr grinder for my coffee beans. To "clean" and bring the interior back to neutral after use, wipe out with paper towel, dry, and grind white rice in it.
