I agree that the architecture of a space matters, but I'm not sure the extent we agree as to how much a protocol really matters, versus what we build with them. Roundabout is built on atproto, and I'm quite happy with the decision. I think our architecture very strongly supports our communities.

A few weeks ago I wrote How decentralized is Bluesky really?, a blogpost which received far more attention than I expected on the fediverse and Bluesky both. Thankfully, the blogpost was received well generally, including by Bluesky's team. This is probably one of the most important issues in terms of labor, tech, UX, etc that the Atmosphere needs to solve (decentralized moderation). I would invite people to pay attention to what the @blackskyweb.xyz team and its community are doing and take notes.
Overlapping context-specific communities, on a whole spectrum of public commons to cozy private spaces, all interoperable in a global network — yeahhhh we've got a big opportunity here!
