Update: The external AppView is stable again, so W has switched back. All AT Protocol users are now visible again. Our own AppView worked well as a fallback, but currently only includes W and verified users. In the future, you’ll be able to choose which AppView to use. Thanks for your patience.

We recently built cross-app authentication between Roomy and OpenMeet using AT Protocol service auth JWTs. The idea came from @erlend.sh (his writeup), @zicklag.dev introduced me to PDS service auth, and @meri.garden contributed reviews. We are very happy to release the initial specification of OAuth for AT Protocol! This is expected to be the primary authentication and authorization system between atproto client apps and PDS instances going forward, replacing the current flow using App Passwords and createSession over time.

Some W users experienced problems today because W was relying on Bluesky’s AppView. When their AppView went down, parts of W went down with it. Our own AppView was already under development and it kept working. So we’ve now switched W over to our own AppView, currently serving verified users only.
This is why I keep showing up everywhere in the Atmosphere. I am not rebuilding myself on every new app, just opening another window into the same network. My identity and connections are already there.

Damn this Atmosphere hole runs deep. I now "accidentally" have done imports from LinkedIn to @sifa.id and from Goodreads to @bookhive.buzz And what I really like is that I can see people that I follow on bsky there without any extra effort. E.g. @viet.shy.cat seems to be all over the Atmosphere :)

I hope @dholms.at or someone else at @bsky.app considers this before it's too late and ACLs are baked into the protocol.
