wait a second, it just dawned on me that atproto delivers on most of the project xanadu concepts that don't require a shit ton of lsd to understand?? minus payments which is what sunk xanadu anyway. fun cs lore rabbit hole for the uninitiated! xanadu.net

Project Xanadu
Wired magazine published an article entitled "The Curse of Xanadu", calling Project Xanadu "the longest-running vaporware story in the history of the computer industry".[3] The first attempt at implementation began in 1960, but it was not until 1998 that an incomplete implementation was released. A version described as "a working deliverable", OpenXanadu, was made available in 2014.
Project Xanadu: Even More Hindsight
Retrospective on Project Xanaduโs success and failure: a lack of design iteration, meaningful use-cases, or practicality stopped a valuable vision from maturing into something useful. (And contrasted with my approach.)

some thoughts on atproto as a post-app paradigm
Ecosystem Plugins
notes.wesleyfinck.orgThis is partly why I think atproto needs a more convincing vision about being a post-app protocol. A future where atproto is a bunch of apps and each app governs their own lexicon diminishes a lot of its potential in the long-term.

yeah i think i might actually, theres a very interesting story here that the main thing that matters is a focal point around which consensus over a lexicon can get formed
the hard pill to swallow is that 99% of people do not care about whether an app is on "atproto" or if its "decentralized" so long as it works you will not sell the decentralization aspect if your app runs like shit and isn't fun to use even moreso if it's VC Claude slop which is 90% of atproto ww
Imagining atproto as a post-app protocol starts with materializing the social filesystem โ decomposing apps and their data into materials and instruments. For the time being, this guestbook is a good example where the display element is a material and the sign element is an instrument.

in any case, the end game is composing these little guys, whatever goes on behind the scenes. social components
Some thoughts on why ATProto is so exciting from the perspective of what it could unlock software dev wise.
ATProto: Engine of Software 2.0
john.leaflet.pubSome initial atproto-related learnings from #Rebuild Helsinki ๐ซ๐ฎ * most people building apps here have no idea what atproto is, which is a shame since especially when building social apps, atproto is a great starting point for many reasons
My take on the "explaining atproto" discourse is that all the UX/filesystem/etc metaphors are still very verbose and that you can explain the same idea in a lot less words: It separates data from apps, so any app can use data from any other app. That fits in a tweet, with other sentences around it.
