🧵 I've been wracking my brain around ATProto onboarding. Why do all ATProto apps make you create a new account before you can do anything interesting? Why don't we let people start with an email address or phone #? Then claim your identity if/when the need actually arises.

this is a psa , if you visit a website that offers to let you sign in with atmosphere/bluesky you should click the little question mark in the top right. if it says "transition:generic", that app can do ANYTHING with the data in your account, short of dms and actually deleting/moving your account..

Bluesky picking up bots and spam accounts before I can even get into the app to check the notification, while probably over half our followers on X are fake, still. I just wish this app had the equivalent of Spaces cos I'd definitely move.

Claude is inheriting a centralized app-centric bias here (which existing OAuth profiles may share) To wind up in a decentralized world where all "my data" lives on "my PDS" -- regardless of how many atproto apps I authorize to store stuff there for me (see 🧵) -- we should invert that paradigm

I saw some talk about "everything apps" and it got me thinking a little bit about it. With the Atmosphere I feel like a really cool part about it is that we can make all of our apps "everything" apps. It's not "my app's data" or "your app's data" anymore. We can color outside the lines.

ICYMI: We have a new "AI Preferences" setting This allows you to announce to the entire ATmosphere network what you consent to regarding AI use of your public data. Other apps can see this but ~may not~ respect the settings We built this to give you a place to set these and will 100% respect them
