decentralisation moves the centralisation one layer up, as it ever does i do agree with these recommendations tho

Bluesky gives users the power to choose their algorithms, but how does this actually work in practice? In our new preprint, we explore the ecosystem of Bluesky custom feeds and the feed creators behind them! 🧵 arxiv.org/abs/2609.12958

Centralization vs Decentralization - AVC
Decentralization is one of, if not the most, discussed features of the crypto tech stack. In a decentralized system, no single body controls the system. We have most certainly not reached the era fully decentralized systems, but that is what most of the world-class technologists working in the crypto sector are focused on getting us […]

Decentralization: Worth The Wait — Open Tech Strategies | Blog
Ethan Zuckerman has a piece in Wired that says building decentralization tools is a sucker's bet. He and his coauthors, Chelsea Barabas and Neha Narula, mention the FreedomBox, which I helped lead, as an example of how difficult this stuff is. They point to a list of things that make decentralized efforts prone to failure and conclude:

Paradigm shifts for the decentralized Web
The answer to these questions varies with different degrees of decentralization:

A few weeks ago I wrote How decentralized is Bluesky really?, a blogpost which received far more attention than I expected on the fediverse and Bluesky both. Thankfully, the blogpost was received well generally, including by Bluesky's team. Bryan Newbold, core Bluesky engineer, wrote a thoughtful response article: Reply on Bluesky and Decentralization, which I consider worth reading.
Nobody cares about decentralization until they do
A recurring line in discussion of federated, decentralized social media is that no one cares about it. They just want their Twitter without the Nazis. Which is okay. But how it looks on the backend matters. When the illusion of a unified user experience breaks, how accessible the escape pod
Practical Decentralization
The point of decentralization is to guarantee the rights of individuals and communities on the Internet. Pulling that off is a balancing act between practicality and ideology.

Centralization, Decentralization, and Internet Standards
This document discusses aspects of centralization that relate to Internet standards efforts. It argues that, while standards bodies have a limited ability to prevent many forms of centralization, they can still make contributions that assist in the decentralization of the Internet.
atproto is routinely called decentralized. Its upper layers are not. An essay on what nostr solves, what atproto cannot borrow, and where partial AppViews fit. night-terrace.offprint.app/a/3mjsp3tse6g23-decentralizin… $ATOPR

night-terrace.offprint.appThe first post for WTF is here: "Decentralization: Huh?" In this article I discuss what 'decentralization' means as a concept as well as how it can be used to protect us from corporate overreach wtf.samclemente.me/decentralization-huh-t22nqge
Decentralization: Huh? - What The Function!?
wtf.samclemente.meDecentralization is more than just a buzzword. Looking at the AT Protocol, it’s clear: the future belongs to systems that decouple identity and data from the provider. For sweep-it and my other tools, this means focusing on interoperability rather than closed silos. #atproto #decentralization
Actually I don't think #atproto is about decentralization. It's more about indexing over distributed data. @bsky.app and @tangled.org are actually a centralized service just like general web search engines are. But just like search engines, we don't own your content and this is the important part. 🧵

👀👀 To be clear I’m very into decentralized tech and atproto is very cool, I just don’t love shoving it into everything and don’t see it as valuable in a use case like GitHub I’m down to be convinced
