Migrating PDS Account with `goat` | bryan newbold (⛱️ sabbatical mode)
Account migration is an important feature of atproto, and has been possible in the live network since February of this year, but is still a bit scary and developer-oriented. As part of documenting the migration process, I recently implemented basic account migration in the goat CLI tool for atproto...

📝 #WSocial state of the network 📣 for those who are curious about it, considering the enthusiastic endorsement by prestigious European institutions. #OpenData allows me to crunch numbers (information about Bluesky PDSs is readily available). On day 18 since its beta launch in Brussels, W Social has 7935 accounts: - 90,5% have never* published a single post - 82,2% have 0 followers - 78% follow 0 accounts (may be related to #WIdentity and its 13-step process) LMK if you find this useful
💥 It took 72 hours to register the second thousand accounts on @eurosky.social 🎉 I expected more movement over the weekend, but apparently, people prefer to migrate during their working hours 😁
1/X I made an atproto proposal around PDS to PDS repo migration that gets around all of the pain points of account migration today and intentionally builds a migration flow for users to go to the PDS that they want to move to and commence the migration from there.

github.comhere is how i've been explaining PDS migration to the 115 users i've migrated: imagine your bluesky account as being an apartment. you're upset the rent is changing, so you move to a cheaper apartment on the other side of town. after you move, you have to update your address with the post office.

& you lose if you say the word "protocol", "decentralized", "repo", or "pds" to illustrate: the cloud is "the thing where i keep my photos when i drop my phone in a lake". if you even mention a "server" while explaining the cloud then you lost the thread
PDS Operator it's a self hosted dashboard for your PDS. watches labelers and dms you when an account gets flagged. accounts, takedowns, pwd resets, invites, relay status, passkey sign-in, audit log, setup wizard with a qr code. deploy in minutes. tangled.org/brookie.blog/pds-operator
I still can't believe @mancity.com had their account self-hosted on their own PDS before I did

We're very pumped to announce that the reference PDS now has an account management page! atproto.com/blog/pds-account-management You can now manage permissions, update your password, or deactivate your account directly from your PDS, as a regular user — no command line tools or Bluesky interfaces required!

The thought occurred to me (belatedly) that maybe there are other accounts on the promotional website that aren’t actually on W Social yet. Right now, wsocial.news shows me 4 users who are indeed on W Social and 3 who aren’t: @london.gov.uk, @beate.neos.eu, and @teresaribera.ec.europa.eu.

@london.gov.uk is still on wsocial.news and is still not actually on W Social. It’s been long enough to really make it look like it could be the Greta Thunberg thing all over again Sources: pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:axuvbckddrg7lwlp… blog.elenarossini.com/the-untold-story-about-w-soci…
