one thing I really like about atproto is that it provides the infrastructure needed to make open source user apps that actually fucking sync data across devices sorry but the average random hobbyist is absolutely not going to run a user account server for their homebrew todo list app

the open ecosystem for atproto makes it super easy for one developer to build a compelling and feature rich application in their free time that cannot possibly be maintained by one developer in their free time

lowkey if the only incentive to do anything with atproto is for the fun of it, that does not bode well... not saying that there should be monetary incentives, but there's gotta be something more so it doesn't become "this is no longer fun because it got too big" and then the platform dies

I want people to be comfortable paying for an atproto account (ie. space on a PDS) It’s the bedrock of everything we’re building; if it’s not funded it’ll get squeezed in ways that are bad for users (hi Gmail) We should normalise having (very cheap) paid-tier PDS accounts on the services we build

The vector for new signups of atproto accounts is apps. Adoption is unlikely to come through just one app. A “drive” app would actually make sense and I have some ideas there but I think it will be varied. A lot of different apps can get big - from recipes to events to whatever.

adding social features to our websites will accelerate atproto adoption faster than building pure atproto apps

Folks, this isn't some cute side-project where you can just switch out tens of thousands of paying users and force them to use atproto It's a nice idea, but those are the sort of things only possible on new early stage projects
