I see talk on here about the public being "platform brained", and a lot of that in my experience comes down to impatience. It's what you see when mainstream apps change layout. People have expectations about how apps are supposed to work, and learning something else is an imposed waste of effort.

I don't disagree. The standalone experiences are not particularly "the thing". Atproto's glory emerges as competitive compatibility and inter-operation of apps arises more remix-y many-tools-together systems.

Why are people talking about an everything app? Also what do you mean by everything? Because the real everything app is the mobile OS. Do we mean a handful of social/information modalities + payments? I mean that’s cool if the ux makes sense and better than separate apps. It’s not “everything”.

I saw some talk about "everything apps" and it got me thinking a little bit about it. With the Atmosphere I feel like a really cool part about it is that we can make all of our apps "everything" apps. It's not "my app's data" or "your app's data" anymore. We can color outside the lines.

Post-appitalism rejects the super-app as a meaningful alternative to todays app-based production of software. An app that becomes so big that it starts sucking in smaller apps perpetuates the same dynamics no matter how well integrated the smaller apps can be.

Bluesky is scared to commit to making a universal app that works with any atproto lexicon. I am not. And am pretty committed to our social-app fork being able to work with more and more content types (short video, fintech, blogs, music, etc.) Acorn customers get this for their communities too.

I'm building on atproto because I think that a single social network has essentially no shot of dethroning the current tech monopolies. But an open ecosystem of interoperating apps is so infinitely more interesting than legacy social that it seems almost inevitable it will win

You can fork the codebase, maintain your own appview, run your own moderation, get as technically independent as you want but the one thing you can't escape is that app.bsky.* already has an established culture and set of social conventions around it that you have to play nice with.
