USER WAS BLOCKED FOR THIS POST (@blockedforthispost.bsky.social)
This bot posts the things that get people blocked. For block records, we check if the blockee has recently @'d or replied to the blocker. If it matches, we redact it and post it.
A new paper examines blocking on Bluesky: "…blocking does not decrease the popularity and activity of the blocked users and has a limited effect on the social graph." There is a lot more nuance in here. h/t @index.internet.exchangepoint.tech.ap.brid.gy openaccess.city.ac.uk/id/eprint/36822/

openaccess.city.ac.ukMOST IMPORTANTLY coined the phrase "bluesky elder", which i am still blocked by her for riffing on lol anyway, predatory skeeviness of the site back then makes a lot more sense when viewed in the lens of an online version of this vanityfair.com/news/2018/01/brotopia-silicon…

www.vanityfair.comWhen Bluesky does open up and/or federates there will no doubt be an "eternal September"-equivalent rush of folks who won't know/won't care about the standards and practices. The good news is that blocking here is unusually powerful natively and the moderating toolset is increasingly robust.

The dunking thing is a human curse though. If this place grows to be anywhere near as big as its predecessor, I'm convinced we will see that here too. The limited audience plus that's its largely attracting Twitter refugees is what holds that at bay for now.
"bluesky elder" is a meme from when some of the oldheads who signed up for bluesky in like january saw the influx of new users and tried to make a power play for manners and rules and what you can and can't do. Bee was in this and she called herself a "bluesky elder" which everyone promptly laughed
It’s a running joke based on a now thankfully forgotten poster who coined the term to describe those of us who’ve been here since the earlier invite era. To be clear, “bluesky elder” is deliberately self-deprecating and derogatory. The joke is it’s not a good thing (she thought it was tho)
"Don't Engage, Just Block" absolutely IS the Bluesky motto. The notion of a "Bluesky Elder" is vaguely ridiculous but the ONE THING that we oldheads are good for is telling the new folks that blocking without engagement is praxis, and encouraging them to do it early and often.

"Don't Engage, Just Block" should be the Bluesky motto. We have a chance to start over and make this place better than the other place.
