ATProto's design philosophy is inherently suited for academic archives. In Japan, academic services are run by NII and JST, but they've fragmented into CiNii, J-GLOBAL, and researchmap. Data and accounts are siloed. Interface changes often make them harder to use.

I love that the design of atproto was in part inspired by big social Kafka and ScyllaDB server backends and @martin.kleppmann.com's Designing Data-Intensive Applications and the community immediately used it to implement thousands of apps with no backend lol
