As we remain mired in our worst statewide drought in more than 18 years, comparisons with historical droughts -- especially that memorable 2007-08 event -- have become common in recent weeks, including in our own assessment of the current drought and its impacts. We've generally labeled the 2007-08 drought as the worst in North Carolina's
City of Statesville Moves to Stage 2 Water Restrictions
The City of Statesville is currently under Stage 3 (Extreme Drought) conditions. Beginning at 8 a.m. on May 4, 2026, the City will enforce water use restrictions with fines. This enforcement action is authorized under 15A NCAC 02E .0607, the City of Statesville Code of Ordinances, Section 23, Division 2 (Water Shortage Response Procedures), and the City of Statesville Water Shortage Response Plan (adopted June 5, 2023), following a drought advisory issued by the North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council and the establishment of the City’s Water Shortage Leadership Team on April 22, 2026.

Texas coastal city faces worsening water shortage due to prolonged drought
After years of drought and rising demand, Corpus Christi's water supply is nearing critical levels, raising concerns for residents and one of the nation's largest energy hubs.
Victorian Climate Collaboration – Our Policy Platform
Across Australia and around the world, the impacts of climate change are being felt through worsening bushfires, floods, droughts and heatwaves. The impacts we are experiencing now are early signals of far worse to come. Time is rapidly running out to avoid the devastating impacts of a 2°C or warmer world. Every fraction of degree of warming matters and will be measured in lives, species and ecosystems lost or saved.
Correcting climate ‘misperceptions’ may not boost climate action - Carbon Brief
Most people "underestimate" general support for climate change and "overestimate" actual, real-world climate action.
Political Scenarios for Climate Disaster - Dissent Magazine
In the Global North we often act as if our future will be a warmer version of today: liberal capitalism, plus flood insurance, minus coral reefs. That future is a fantasy.

Climate Change: Global Crisis To Local Action By Kevin Anderson
RETRACTED ARTICLE: The economic commitment of climate change
Global projections of macroeconomic climate-change damages typically consider impacts from average annual and national temperatures over long time horizons1–6. Here we use recent empirical findings from more than 1,600 regions worldwide over the past 40 years to project sub-national damages from temperature and precipitation, including daily variability and extremes7,8. Using an empirical approach that provides a robust lower bound on the persistence of impacts on economic growth, we find that the world economy is committed to an income reduction of 19% within the next 26 years independent of future emission choices (relative to a baseline without climate impacts, likely range of 11–29% accounting for physical climate and empirical uncertainty). These damages already outweigh the mitigation costs required to limit global warming to 2 °C by sixfold over this near-term time frame and thereafter diverge strongly dependent on emission choices. Committed damages arise predominantly through changes in average temperature, but accounting for further climatic components raises estimates by approximately 50% and leads to stronger regional heterogeneity. Committed losses are projected for all regions except those at very high latitudes, at which reductions in temperature variability bring benefits. The largest losses are committed at lower latitudes in regions with lower cumulative historical emissions and lower present-day income.
