Hi Folks, Dorian again. You may remember me from such poasts as the one a few weeks ago about the protocol-agnostic PDS I plan to cook up. Well I’m back as I’ve been summoned by Christian to tease you all with another one: I know there’s been recent chatter about creating an app directory (or several?), so what might that look like? Even better: what if the metadata that drove such an app directory was on the protocol—so anybody who wanted to make their own app directory could make one? What if...
Taxonomy for ATmospheric Lexicon and App Directories
I kept going to pull quotes but just like, all of this. lol Something really basic like a taxonomy of concepts has the potential to skew heavily social, because at a technical level there’s almost nothing to it: you have an identity with some labels (synonyms, language-tagged strings—not sure how those’ll be implemented), you might have a definition, and then you have a handful of semantic relations, and the concept scheme class to yoke them together. (Again, I’m using SKOS as a template for th...

Lexicon Embeds Overview
ATProto’s inside out structure provides an opportunity for open, permissionless building on top of any component in the network, including its extensible data schema definition system, Lexicons. One of the opportunities this presents is users sharing their data and records with multiple apps. Those apps may be direct substitutions (different clients for microblogging say), or apps that use that data in a variety of ways, such as Popfeed an app which aggregates posts about a variety of media ty...

ATProto Apps with their own records as of 2025-11-20 - grouped by some general types - Hilary's Leaflet
This is not a comprehensive list but it is pretty thorough. There are at least 10 more I need to dig into and probably add here later today maybe. This does NOT include PDSs, Appviews, and clients. The goal was for it to be a list of apps that have their own records in the PDS.
Some thoughts on a taxonomy of ATmospheric apps. I see an ecosystem developing with three categories: - Symbionts, tightly coupled with Bsky; - Offshoots, growing large, parallel communities; and - Cuckoos, which scan as skeuomorphic clones on ATproto but go beyond. numergent.com/2026-04/A-taxonomy-of-ATmosph…
A taxonomy of ATmosphere applications
numergent.com@atpota.to and @dame.is, we were talking about making an ATProto-powered app directory on the community forum and someone found your atproto.garden and some records lying around. Are you interested in sharing your lexicons or talking about what a simple directory lexicon might look like?
A community app lexicon
discourse.atprotocol.communityThis is partly why I think atproto needs a more convincing vision about being a post-app protocol. A future where atproto is a bunch of apps and each app governs their own lexicon diminishes a lot of its potential in the long-term.
Laurens
yeah i think i might actually, theres a very interesting story here that the main thing that matters is a focal point around which consensus over a lexicon can get formed
