Back in the late 1980s, as a college student, I would go to the NHL offices in downtown Montreal, and pick up their official end-of-season statistics package. This was something that was reserved for the media, but somehow I had the idea to ask, and they were kind enough to oblige. Since I was learning dBase, I then had to manually enter every piece of data in that package, probably some 20,000 discrete data values. Combining sports, numbers, and computers was a labour of love for me. Add in that in the 1980s, Pete Palmer and Bill James inspired the sabermetric revolution: my career path was set, as was that of thousands more.

Exploring Psychology in the Field: Steps and Examples From the Used‐Car Market
Abstract The growing availability of large datasets in a variety of domains presents an opportunity for researchers to use field data to better understand psychological concepts. I discuss, from an empirical economics point of view, steps for how to study cognition in large datasets. I use two recent papers that explore psychology in the used‐car market as motivating examples. These examples help illustrate the potential importance of big data as a way to explore human psychology and cognition. , The growing availability of large datasets in a variety of domains presents an opportunity for researchers to use field data to better understand psychological concepts. Broadening Access to Data Science Education in High School and Higher Education through Open Source Tools and Training
As data plays a more integral part to our daily lives, there is a growing need for data science education. However, access to curriculum, tooling, and infrastructure is not readily available to many students in the U.S. We review the current state of data science education tools and implementations as well as highlight a set of emerging tools and technologies. We conclude that broadening data science education requires a multifaceted approach, involving technological accessibility, instructional equity, curricular relevance, and long-term sustainability.
