Kit-of-parts theory refers to the study and application of object-oriented building techniques, where building components are pre-designed / pre-engineered / pre-fabricated for inclusion in joint-based (linear element), panel-based (planar element), module-based (solid element), and deployable (time element) construction systems.[1]
Kit-of-No-Parts
Conventionally electronics that are built from a kit-of-parts have been optimized for speed, efficiency and repeatability of assembly. While this approach demonstrates the power of modular systems that have made many of the technologies we rely on possible, it also constrains us to particular styles of building, influencing what we build as well as impacting how we come to think about electronics. A Kit-of-No-Parts demonstrates a new approach to building electronics that emphasizes the expressive qualities of diverse materials as well as the skill and creativity of the builder. I believe that a more insightful and skilled process is also capable of producing more intelligible and personal results. In order to promote a different approach I have developed a series of techniques that allow us to build electronics using a variety of craft materials and tools. This website documents these techniques in the form of “recipes”. Besides containing instructions on how to build electronics these recipes are also detailed accounts of my development process that aim to promote further exploration and material investigation, instead of straightforward replication. This website is both the documentation and result of my thesis work towards a masters degree in the High-Low Tech research group at the MIT Media Lab. My thesis describes A Kit-of-No-Parts as an approach to crafting electronics, rather than designing discrete components. While the thesis has been written and handed in, this website remains a work in progress. I continue to add new information and update the existing. >> Download Thesis

Architectural mismatch: why reuse is so hard
Why isn't there more progress toward building systems from existing parts? One answer is that the assumptions of the parts about their intended environment are implicit and either don't match the actual environment or conflict with those of other parts. The authors explore these problems in the context of their own experience with a compositional approach.<>

Object-Oriented Entity-Component-System Design – John Lin's Thoughts
About two months ago, I decided to start developing a fresh codebase for my voxel project – something that many indie developers are probably all-too familiar with, including myself. This time around, there were three major features that I wanted to implement:
Issues · WebAssembly/component-model
Repository for design and specification of the Component Model - Issues · WebAssembly/component-model
The mythical matched modules | Proceedings of the 24th ACM SIGPLAN conference companion on Object oriented programming systems languages and applications
Certified compilers are complex software systems. Like other large systems, they demand modular, extensible designs. While there has been progress in extensible metatheory mechanization, scaling extensibility and reuse to meet the demands of full ...
Applied Category Theory for Engineering
This site is a place to make available some resources on compositionality and engineering, and it is maintained by the Frazzoli group at ETH Zurich and by the Zardini group at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is skewed towards our particular knowledge and interests (applied category theory for robotics and the co-design of complex engineering systems), however we hope it may be useful to a broad range of people working on compositional methods in engineering, computer science, the natural sciences, and mathematics.
