Studies of meaning evolve from semiotics, a philosophical approach that seeks to interpret messages in terms of signs and patterns of symbolism. Contemporary semiotics consists of two branches originating contemporaneously in late 19th century France and the United States. Originating in literary and linguistic contexts, one branch (referred to as semiology) originated from the work of Swiss linguist Ferdinand Saussure. The second branch expands on the work of American pragmatist philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce.

'poetic web: unfolding spiral' is a non-linear text I wrote as part of my bachelor thesis at the HFBK Hamburg. Driven by curiosity about the poetic web, the object of the text rather became the opening of a reflective space, where I could touch on the constraints and possibilities of language, words, worlds, and their artifacts, relation and meaning-making, smoothness, attention, and agency, and see how subtle shifts in understanding allowed for words to restructure and new meanings to grow.

Jan Švankmajer
Jan Švankmajer is a Czech retired film director, animator, writer, playwright and artist. He draws and makes free graphics, collage, ceramics, tactile objects and assemblages. In the early 1960s, he explored informel, which later became an important part of the visual form of his animated films. He is a leading representative of late Czech surrealism. In his film work, he created an unmistakable and quite specific style, determined primarily by a compulsively unorthodox combination of externally disparate elements. The anti-artistic nature of this process, based on collage or assemblage, functions as a meaning-making factor. The author himself claims that the intersubjective communication between him and the viewer works only through evoked associations, and his films fulfil their subversive mission only when, even in the most fantastic moments, they look like a record of reality. Some of the works he created together with his wife Eva Švankmajerová.
Vector Theory: Epistemology, Political Economy, and Probabilistic Computation
This article introduces vector theory as a critical approach for understanding the shift from symbolic to probabilistic computation in contemporary AI systems. The paper argues that the digital turn organised meaning through discrete bits, Boolean logic, and hierarchical structures, in contrast large language models (LLMs) and diffusion architectures operate through high-dimensional vector spaces, cosine similarity, and probability manifolds. The three sections of the article examine the geometry of meaning, the dynamics of stochastic flow, and the political economy of the vector turn. These sections connect concepts such as vectors, tokenisation and generative AI to critical traditions from Marx through the Frankfurt School to contemporary media theory. Drawing on and expanding Kittler’s media materialism, Stiegler’s grammatisation, and Deleuze’s notion of smooth space, the article argues that existing approaches, developed under the paradigm of discrete digitality and symbolic logic, generate too many explanatory anomalies. The vector paradigm represents a new stage in the real subsumption of cognitive and linguistic labour, where capital reconstitutes language as geometry within proprietary vector space. The article connects this to notions of cognitive anaesthesia and the systematic “smoothing” of social friction, arguing that this potentially threatens the tacit dimension of critical thought, the very faculties required to diagnose the computational regime that produces it.
