They say you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. Are we doing that with our communities?
Opinion | There Are Two Economies: A.I. and Everything Else
This is worse than putting all your eggs in one basket.

What Good Is ‘Community’ When Someone Else Makes All the Rules? (Published 2018)
Life online can offer us a sense of belonging in any number of virtual villages. But the power to control those spaces isn’t very communal at all.

Pluralistic: Market participation is exhausting (30 Mar 2026) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow
We're a diverse species, cognitively speaking – different ways of thinking come more easily to some of us than others. I'm good at a lot of things, but I have terrible spatial sense. I can't parallel park or catch a ball, and I get lost so easily it's almost comical (it's a running joke in my family).
The Global Fertility Trade: A Story of Extraction, Exploitation and Opportunity
Following human eggs as they’re exchanged across open, gray and black markets — reaping rewards for an extremely high price.

"The protocol world has been trying to solve the problem of how to leave, and the next step is working on how we can stay together."
It's not enough to be free. We also need to be in community
Communities are not fungible
There's a default assumption baked into how Silicon Valley builds products, and it tracks against how urban planners redesign neighbourhoods: that communities are interchangeable, and if you "lose" one, you can manufacture a replacement; that the value of a group of people who share space and history can be captured

Bonfire — build your community a world of its own
A space a community owns together, shaped to how you already gather, and connected to the whole open social web on your own terms.
Let’s talk about money
When we were building the first version of Open Collective, we found that communities and their members often had a complex relationship…

We started a farming club. Why you should start one too
We are long overdue for a return to growing our own food, and the farming club offers a promising way to reconnect with that tradition.

Totally Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies
Along with chocolate, there is much comfort to be gleaned from reading cookbooks. This recipe combines two loves by being chocolatey to the point of madness and having revealed itself to me after a cosy, snuggled-down read of Elinor Klivans' glorious Big Fat Cookies. What I do is make up the full batch of these (hard to divide it really, since it contains only 1 egg) and form all 12 cookies, but bake only half and freeze the other half. I freeze them on a little tray and, once they're hard, I bung them in a freezer bag, seal it and stash it back in the freeze, to bake them unthawed at a later date. That way, I've got 6 chocolate cookies to keep me and my family happy without any time or effort. This is what I call an investment. And it's worth it — these are the chocolatiest cookies you will ever come across.

The Condition of Giving
Why I'm building a gifting community on a network you actually own, and what that has to do with a couch, a geohash, and the open web.
Who wants to be in the Denim community? | FeverBee
In this post we look at why a traditional community just isn’t suited to most companies. But elements of the community can be used in many different ways to drive positive outcomes.

We're launching a community server on Discord! It's a space for folks who contribute, build on, or use Bridgy Fed and Bounce, and a place for folks to support each other through any issues they may run into. That said, we know Discord isn't everyone's ideal choice - it's not ours either... 1/🧵
