Emacs 29 is getting native Tree-Sitter support, and the buzz is hard to miss. Tree-Sitter maintains and provides a concrete parse tree of the buffer that you can query, but that’s as far as it goes. Acting on this information to provide context-aware navigation and editing tools is left to package authors, who have picked up this baton and started running with it! In the last few months we’ve had structural editing packages popping up all over the place.
Combobulate: Structured Movement and Editing with Tree-Sitter
Combobulate is a package that adds advanced structured editing and movement to many programming modes in Emacs. Here's how it works, and how it can enrich your editing experience in Emacs.

Introduction - Tree-sitter
Tree-sitter is a parser generator tool and an incremental parsing library. It can build a concrete syntax tree for a source file and efficiently update the syntax tree as the source file is edited. Tree-sitter aims to be:

The SQLite R*Tree Module
An R-Tree is a special index that is designed for doing range queries. R-Trees are most commonly used in geospatial systems where each entry is a rectangle with minimum and maximum X and Y coordinates. Given a query rectangle, an R-Tree is able to quickly find all entries that are contained within the query rectangle or which overlap the query rectangle. This idea is easily extended to three dimensions for use in CAD systems. R-Trees also find use in time-domain range look-ups. For example, suppose a database records the starting and ending times for a large number of events. A R-Tree is able to quickly find all events that were active at any time during a given time interval, or all events that started during a particular time interval, or all events that both started and ended within a given time interval. And so forth.
Constructing an HTML Tree | Web Browser Engineering
So far, our browser sees web pages as a stream of open tags, close tags, and text. But HTML is actually a tree, and though the tree structure hasn’t been important yet, it will be central to later features like CSS, JavaScript, and visual effects. So this chapter adds a proper HTML parser and converts the layout engine to use it.

WikiKV: Schema-Evolving Path-Indexed Storage for Hierarchical Knowledge Navigation
LLM-curated hierarchical knowledge bases, namely a tree-structured wiki whose nodes summarize an underlying corpus, have become a dominant substrate for retrieval-augmented applications, yet their storage layer is still treated as an implementation detail. This workload is hierarchical, query-intensive, and continuously evolving, and no existing storage model natively captures all three properties at once. We present WikiKV, a path-indexed key-value storage model purpose-built for this workload, comprising three components: (i) a data-driven schema that bootstraps the hierarchy via Intent-Anchored Schema Induction and refines it through Continuous Evolution Operators; (ii) a consistency protocol for the path-indexed storage model that precludes partial-read observations under concurrent offline rewrites without read-path locking; and (iii) a budgeted navigation operator whose search-accelerated routing reduces the expected number of LLM-assisted descent steps from d to O(1) while preserving anytime semantics with progressively refined answers. We evaluate WikiKV through real-world deployment for the WeChat Official Account AI Assistant and benchmark it against diverse baselines on the AuthTrace dataset, where it achieves balanced low per-operator latency across four query operators against relational, graph, and FS backends, and reaches 63.2% end-to-end answer correctness, exceeding multiple RAG baselines, with the gap widening on low- and high-fan-in multi-document questions. Ablation study further confirms the effectiveness of WikiKV's components.

Edit lenses
A lens is a bidirectional transformation between a pair of connected data structures, capable of translating an edit on one structure into an appropriate edit on the other. Many varieties of lenses have been studied, but none, to date, has offered a satisfactory treatment of how edits are represented. Many foundational accounts only consider edits of the form "overwrite the whole structure," leading to poor behavior in many situations by failing to track the associations between corresponding parts of the structures when elements are inserted and deleted in ordered lists, for example. Other theories of lenses do maintain these associations, either by annotating the structures themselves with change information or using auxiliary data structures, but every extant theory assumes that the entire original source structure is part of the information passed to the lens.We offer a general theory of edit lenses, which work with descriptions of changes to structures, rather than with the structures themselves. We identify a simple notion of "editable structure"--a set of states plus a monoid of edits with a partial monoid action on the states--and construct a semantic space of lenses between such structures, with natural laws governing their behavior. We show how a range of constructions from earlier papers on "state-based" lenses can be carried out in this space, including composition, products, sums, list operations, etc. Further, we show how to construct edit lenses for arbitrary containers in the sense of Abbott, Altenkirch, and Ghani. Finally, we show that edit lenses refine a well-known formulation of state-based lenses, in the sense that every state-based lens gives rise to an edit lens over structures with a simple overwrite-only edit language, and conversely every edit lens on such structures gives rise to a state-based lens.
