Ann and Michael find things programmers never would have.Since unit testing and test-driven development burst onto the programming scene in the early 2000s, too many programmers have deluded themse…
Test-Driven Approaches to Software Engineering with Large Language...
Tests increasingly participate in the decisions made by large language models and software engineering agents. They specify intended behavior, guide program construction and repair, select...

How building software is changing at Anthropic
A deepdive on what’s changed in how the leading AI lab makes software. Ever more code review and testing is done by AI, two-pizza teams very much alive, and more. Details from inside of Anthropic

Testing can be fun, actually
Writing and maintaining tests is boring. But they're also some of the most valuable code we can write. With this blog post you'll learn a criminally underrated testing technique to add to your testing toolbox that can make tests a whole lot more pleasant.

A Software Engineering Culture Test
See a shorter, and updated version of this test here: The Pragmatic Engineer Test: 12 Questions on Engineering Culture [https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/pragmatic-engineer-test/]. I've talked with dozens of software developers about what they like and dislike about their workplace - team, and company - professionally. I'm starting

Tests Are The New Moat | Daniel Saewitz
As AI becomes better at cloning people's open source work, what ends up becoming most valuable are software contracts, tests, and API surface area. This clashes the incentives of clearly defining your commercialized open source software with protecting it.
Programming as Theory Building: Why Senior Developers Are More Valuable Than Ever
Peter Naur's 1985 theory of programming explains why experience matters more in the age of AI-generated code

We should rethink how we teach people to code | deadSimpleTech
It's fair to say that the tech industry at the moment is not in a good place. Software engineers tend to be detached, demotivated and unwilling to care much about the work they're doing beyond their paycheck. Code quality is poor on the whole, made worse by the current spate of vibe coding and whatever other febrile ideas come out of Sam Altman's brain. Much of the software that we write is either useless or actively hurts people. And the talented, creative people that we most need in the industry are pushed to the margins of it.

Revisiting Joel's Test - exe.dev blog
Joel Spolsky's twelve questions still hold, but agents demand nine more. Call it the Shelley test.

Its Time for a New Programming Language
Today, when compared to any other point in programming history, we find ourselves spoiled for choice when it comes to programming…

What Actually Happens When Programmers Use AI Is Hilarious, According to a New Study
As AI takes the programming world by storm, experienced devs are still the gold standard — and they're better off without AI assistance, too.

I like this quote on code review: "The idea that humans will reliably look through code to find the increasingly rare issues that automated tools miss seems like a fantasy." By Marc Brooker, AWS.

Usage, Effects and Requirements for AI Coding Assistants in the Enterprise: An Empirical Study
The rise of large language models (LLMs) has accelerated the development of automated techniques and tools for supporting various software engineering tasks, e.g., program understanding, code generation, software testing, and program repair. As CodeLLMs are being employed toward automating these tasks, one question that arises, especially in enterprise settings, is whether these coding assistants and the code LLMs that power them are ready for real-world projects and enterprise use cases, and how do they impact the existing software engineering process and user experience. In this paper we survey 57 developers from different domains and with varying software engineering skill about their experience with AI coding assistants and CodeLLMs. We also reviewed 35 user surveys on the usage, experience and expectations of professionals and students using AI coding assistants and CodeLLMs. Based on our study findings and analysis of existing surveys, we discuss the requirements for AI-powered coding assistants.

The Real Reason We Still Need Software Developers in the World of AI
The dream of AI churning out perfect production-ready code doesn’t hold up against the reality of modern software development.

How Antithesis Turned exe into a Sandbox for Agentic Software Tests - exe.dev blog
Carl Sverre spends a lot of time thinking about how to give AI agents the right amount of power. Give them too little, and they can’t do real work. Give them too much, and they might blow up your tech stack. As a software engineer at Antithesis, an autonomous software testing platform, that question is core to how Sverre thinks about designing tools in the era of advanced AI.
