@why.bsky.team how locked to the http+dns+ssl nexus of publisher-centric control is atproto? i see https noted briefly in xrpc docs. how local+offline and transport agnostic can we get here? bluetooth / mdns / laser / pigeon transports possible?

Web publishing is facing its next challenge: a new iteration of centralizing platforms. BUT there is also a new wave of open protocols and standards that can help us gain our independence. Next month in NYC we are gathering a group of frontier technologists and popular web publishers to discuss how we can sail into this next platform shift as captains. #ProtocolsForPublishers Learn more and sign up here: https://pfp.unternet.co We will be hosting talks on #atproto #mcp #webapplets and web payments, and give publishers the opportunity to interact directly with developers working on these frontier technologies. Thank you to Unternet, Graze Social, Free our Feeds, and betaworks for their support.
ATPROTO isn’t just for Bluesky weiners
The AT Protocol | Bluesky
The AT Protocol (Authenticated Transfer Protocol, or atproto) is a standard for public conversation and an open-source framework for building social apps.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me About AT Protocol and Bluesky - Stuff Rob Wrote
I've been interested in atproto (the protocol that Bluesky, Blacksky, and many other applications - including pckt, where this blog is hosted! - run on) for abo...

What is atproto?
What is atproto? atproto is two things: A protocol for creating open social networks An open social network atproto, the open social network Today the atproto network has 36+ million users and powers Bluesky and a handful of other apps. Almost all atproto data is public. Content like posts, likes, follows, and photos/videos are publicly accessible to any network participant in a permissionless way. As an example of how open the network is, here’s how easy it is to stream all public data on the network using a public atproto Relay like bsky.network:

The Atproto Spaces Alpha is Live - AT Protocol
Atproto Spaces, formerly known as “the permissioned data protocol,” is a new extension to atproto that enables non-public data. The alpha is now officially open. Here’s how to develop with it and what to expect as we work towards the full release.

A deep dive into community-driven geolocation schemas, emerging projects, and the future of location-aware social networking on Bluesky
atproto for local-first publishing
Exploring an effortless private to publishing pipeline for local-first software leveraging the AT Protocol’s global distribution.

for other atproto ecosystem folks: most things are working smoothly, but you may be seeing slow (high p99) handle resolution (via HTTPS well-known) for *.bsky.social handles (even projects which don't rely on bsky services often need to resolve handles as part of interop)
Bluesky Status
We are seeing elevated errors and timeouts on some Bluesky-hosted services, and are investigating.
Anyway, this is mostly for my friends, but I kinda love the model of “broadcast on atproto, but transfer data privately off protocol”

So @iroh.computer is kinda magic. This turned out to be a huge project, and I'm still reducing the overall complexity, squashing bugs, and cleaning things up, but uh, the endpoint discovery works pretty seamlessly and I can view and download items from another users library in a pretty simple manner
