This post is emblematic of the lacking utilities for basic sense-making and truth-seeking in mainstream social media. 🧵 tl;dr: we need edits & edit-notifications to facilitate self-corrections.

From Users to (Sense)Makers: On the Pivotal Role of Stigmergic Social Annotation in the Quest for Collective Sensemaking
The web has become a dominant epistemic environment, influencing people's beliefs at a global scale. However, online epistemic environments are increasingly polluted, impairing societies' ability to coordinate effectively in the face of global crises. We argue that centralized platforms are a main source of epistemic pollution, and that healthier environments require redesigning how we collectively govern attention. Inspired by decentralization and open source software movements, we propose Open Source Attention, a socio-technical framework for "freeing" human attention from control by platforms, through a decentralized eco-system for creating, storing and querying stigmergic markers; the digital traces of human attention.

Beyond Misinformation: Social Media and the Sculpting of Epistemic Agency
ABSTRACT The dominant account of social media's epistemic harms focuses on the spread of misinformation and the production of false beliefs at scale. This paper argues that the misinformation narrative, whatever its merits, has obscured a deeper and more intimate form of epistemic damage. Dominant social media platforms do not merely supply bad inputs to stable epistemic machinery. They reshape the machinery itself. I argue that social media platforms are powerful engines for sculpting epistemic agency via two mechanisms: normative learning, through which users internalize descriptive and injunctive norms about how to interact with evidence, and reinforcement learning, through which habitual patterns of epistemic response are developed. In these ways, platforms can reshape users' epistemic styles, including their testimonial policies, evidential thresholds for belief revision, and theoretical values governing how they select explanations. This should trouble us, as the constraints driving which styles are produced are systematically orthogonal to truth and ignore information about the environments agents inhabit. This discussion identifies a neglected form of epistemic hostility: not the exploitation of existing cognitive vulnerabilities to implant false beliefs, but the production of new vulnerabilities that can then be exploited. From this, more and better evidence cannot save us.

One benefit of a “proof of fidelity” system where you aren’t trying to solve for such a narrow question of “is this a human”, is that you don’t need to rely on means of validation that can be biased or inaccessible for many actual humans, such as gov IDs or irl events.2/x— 🌸 ellie 🌸 (@heyellieday) July 29, 2021
How Social Media Rewards Misinformation
A majority of false stories are spread by a small number of frequent users, suggests a new study co-authored by Yale SOM’s Gizem Ceylan. But they can be taught to change their ways.

Social media algorithms don't allow us to understand or control what we see online and why... until now! Top scholars @jonathanstray.com and @noupside.bsky.social are sharing @mysky.social, a tool that allows users to adjust their feed’s priorities and explains why certain posts appear over others.

newpublic.substack.comWe’re finally writing code in plain english, understandable to maybe half the population (at some level).. but apparently that code doesn’t belong in the version-controlled record of work, nor in the group chat? thankfully @maggieappleton.com has solutions

It's multiplayer chats, plus agents, and everyone working in sandboxed vms so you're all sharing the same code and context. Prompt and code together, in real time. You're all connected to the same computer. You can all see the same outputs. No one is stashing work and switching git branches.
Sure seems like there’s nothing stopping @ghost.org from hopping on board the AT train now at very low dev cost. Would love for our existing Ghost blog to magically turn @standard.site compatible overnight.

My first Leaflet!! You can now publish TO @standard.site lexicons from @astro.build sites using my new plugin! As sites like @pckt.blog and @leaflet.pub and @offprint.app add support for the site.standard lexicon, this plugin will let you publish to and pull from those other sites! #atproto #atdev
I’m dying to see a Blento + Svedit (by @michaelaufreiter.com ) team-up. We deserve a better linktree.

been working on a open source replacement for bento.me (which is shutting down) using your bluesky pds to save your data. still very much work in progress, but can be tried it out here (editing your blento currently desktop only): blento.app source code (svelte ofc :P): github.com/flo-bit/blento
God I know people find this site slightly annoying or whatever but this is the pinnacle of social media to me. This whole feed is running on someone's CPU serving thousands of users in a decentralised manner. Absolutely lovely. Thank you space cowboy

The For You feed is going to be down while I'm upgrading the CPU from AMD 7900 (12 core) to AMD 9950X3D (16 core). This should increase how many users it can serve by ~50%-100%. If all goes well it should be back up in an hour or two.
