A prompt engineering functional programming language

The Next 7000 Programming Languages

Landin’s seminal paper “The next 700 programming languages” considered programming languages prior to 1966 and speculated on the next 700. Half-a-century on, we cast programming languages in a Darwinian ‘tree of life’ and explore languages, their features (genes) and language evolution from the viewpoint of ‘survival of the fittest’.

Its Time for a New Programming Language

Today, when compared to any other point in programming history, we find ourselves spoiled for choice when it comes to programming…

Resugaring | Proceedings of the 35th ACM SIGPLAN Conference on Programming Language Design and Implementation

Syntactic sugar plays a crucial role in engineering programming languages. It offers convenient syntax and higher-level of abstractions, as witnessed by its pervasive use in both general-purpose and domain-specific contexts. Unfortunately, the ...

The mythical matched modules | Proceedings of the 24th ACM SIGPLAN conference companion on Object oriented programming systems languages and applications

Certified compilers are complex software systems. Like other large systems, they demand modular, extensible designs. While there has been progress in extensible metatheory mechanization, scaling extensibility and reuse to meet the demands of full ...

Thoughts about design, code, technology and everything in between.

Boomerang | Proceedings of the 35th annual ACM SIGPLAN-SIGACT symposium on Principles of programming languages

Bidirectional programming languages are a practical approach to the view update problem. Programs in these languages, called lenses, define both a view and an update policy - i.e., every program can be read as a function mapping sources to views as well ...

The Green Side of the Lua

The United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development highlights the importance of energy-efficient software to reduce the global carbon footprint. Programming languages and execution models...

A Coming Revolution in Metaprogramming | Will Crichton

A single programming language is no longer enough. I predict that soon, the best programmers will fluently move between languages and the best languages will interoperate well with others. This interoperability will likely stem from strong metaprogramming facilities. I examine how we might build a programmable compiler and look at recent work toward that end.
