The ActivityPub protocol is a decentralized social networking protocol based upon the [ActivityStreams] 2.0 data format. It provides a client to server API for creating, updating and deleting content, as well as a federated server to server API for delivering notifications and content.

It provides a client-to-server (C2S) API for creating and modifying content, as well as a federated server-to-server (S2S) protocol for delivering notifications and content to other servers. ActivityPub is the defining standard of the Fediverse, a decentralised social network of various social interaction models, and content types, which consists of independently managed instances of software such as Mastodon, Pixelfed and PeerTube, among others.

It's always fascinating to me that proponents of Activity Pub are always like, "Just use AP, it's better." Isn't the point of decentralization to have no single point of failure? Why doesn't that mean multiple protocols? Everyone who argues that point honestly just sounds salty to me.
At FediForum 2026, ActivityPub co-author Evan Prodromou explained why the protocol succeeded by staying deliberately ordinary and why the W3C's Q3 2026 revision needs to keep it that way.
