The ubiquity of IBM PC compatibles as well as the lack of a single corporation that controls the platform makes it a good candidate for a bedrock platform.
bedrock platform
A bedrock platform is a hardware platform or a universal virtual machine that can be expected to remain compatible with any software that has ever been written for it. Bedrock platforms can be used to prevent software rot.
The Framework Desktop may be the easiest PC you've ever built
The Framework Desktop was made by people who hate imprecise, vague instructions. It's a desktop PC you can build in minutes, with your hand held every step of the way.
CNCF Platforms White Paper
This paper intends to support enterprise leaders, enterprise architects and platform team leaders to advocate for, investigate and plan internal platforms for cloud computing. We believe platforms significantly impact enterprises' actual value streams, but only indirectly, so leadership consensus and support is vital to the long-term sustainability and success of platform teams. In this paper we'll enable that support by discussing what the value of platforms is, how to measure it, and how to implement platform teams that maximize it.
Why Microsoft needed to make Windows run Linux software
And how it could leapfrog Apple as the dev platform of choice.
A Common Sense Guide to Selection Of A Computer System
A vast amount of computer equipment is being dumped on the Australian landscape. The glossy advertisements illustrate microcomputers everywhere. Hurtling through space. Nestled on the moon's surface. Artfully sharp in a 21st century space home. Peering out from foliage in a contrived jungle setting. Just occasionally they are even depicted in a practical business environment. How does a business person with little appreciation of this new technology go about rationally deciding what is for the best?Is a computer necessary? How should it be evaluated? Is one ‘system’ as good as another? What are the pitfalls? How is a Selection criteria established? The task of selecting an appropriate computer system from the plethora of possibilities is not easy, but it need not be prohibitive. What is needed is common sense information. Bezos said the quiet part out loud — hopes that you'll give up your PC for a cloud one

Platform Studies
The Platform Studies book series has been established to promote the investigation of underlying computing systems and how they enable, constrain, shape and support the creative work that is done on them. The series investigates the foundations of digital media — the computing systems, both hardware and software, that developers and users depend upon for artistic, literary, and gaming development. Books in the series will certainly vary in their approaches, but they will all also share certain features: A focus on a single platform or a closely related family of platforms; Technical rigor and in-depth investigation of how computing technologies work; An awareness of and discussion of how computing platforms exist in a context of culture and society, being developed based on cultural concepts and then contributing to culture in a variety of ways — for instance, by affecting how people perceive computing.
