Drinks with Nice People — Silicon Valley Version | Partiful
With five solid events in NYC and a recent hit in North Beach San Francisco, I am taking pity on overworked people living in Silicon Valley and bringing this popular and much needed event to your backyard. The purpose is simple: gather convivial gracious people of all ages, backgrounds and interests for conversation and drinks (including non-alcoholic) and let the fun begin. Rules are simple: RSVP (even if you can’t make it or aren’t sure), invite other interesting friendly people, show up, buy your own drinks and bites (though I may throw in a couple trays), and have a swell time. This is not a networking or pitching or tech event (thankfully!) it’s for purely human enjoyment. See you Wednesday!

The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters
Being deprived of social gatherings revealed just how important they are; to connect with others, collaborate, share ideas and create moving, life-affirming experiences. ___________________________If there's one thing lockdown showed us, it's that time together is a gift we've too often taken for granted. In The Art of Gathering, Priya Parker shows us how to ensure that however we meet, it's a truly transformative experience. An expert on organizing successful gatherings whether in conference centres, crisis zones or her living room, Parker sets forth a human-centred approach to gathering that can help us create meaningful, memorable moments - large and small, for work and play. The result is a book full of exciting real-world ideas that will forever alter the way you look at your next business meeting, dinner party and garden barbecue.___________________________ 'Hosts of all kinds, this is a must-read!' We Are Civic Media
A discipline-crossing introduction to civic media via accounts from grassroots practitioners “Civic media” is the use of contemporary technologies to connect communities, inspire action, build civic capacity, and sustain social change efforts. Written by artists, creators, storytellers, organizers, and others working at the intersections of technology, social justice, and culture, this book summons civic media through the lived experiences of its contributors. Latoya Peterson delves into the therapeutic power of gaming; Akilah Hughes discusses identity and community through the lens of her campaign to change her high school's racist mascot; and Tyree Boyd-Pates emphasizes the potential power of museum curation to challenge power dynamics and bridge digital and physical realms. Through the experiences of these grassroots practitioners and many others, We Are Civic Media offers accessible insights for those interested in understanding, respecting, and practicing civic media.
Who Rules Oakland? : Indybay
The Oakland Chamber of Commerce and other business lobbies in the East Bay have recently pressured government officials to crack down on Occupy Oakland. Furthermore, they have popularized a narrative portraying Occupy as "harmful to local business." We critically examine ruling class networks of shared ownership, governance, and political advocacy impacting communities in Oakland by revealing links between the directors and executives of major corporations that are members in the Oakland Chamber of Commerce. In subsequent parts to this series we will provide more detailed information about the directors and executives of these companies, and provide an analysis of their social cohesion, profit-driven collusion, and political influence. More broadly, we will explore networks and institutions of economic and political power in the Bay Area.
