Mannequin in Miniature: Building the Official Burnley & Trowbridge Body for Online Workshops
Join Christina Johnson for our mini-workshop where students will build the malleable bust for the B & T approved mini mannequin, a collaboration with Ruth Watkin Costumes. The B & T approved mannequin will be the base for many of our future online workshops. Pointers and recommendations will also be given for the construction of the mannequin body. You may choose to assemble by hand or by machine, but hand finishing will be required. Using our workshop methods, this mannequin will serve as an excellent base for historical foundation garments of all eras. In this workshop participants will: Be given a list of additional materials needed for the bust area of the mannequin. Go through a step-by-step process to build and attach the malleable bust which will allow you to stay or corset the mannequin to the proper silhouette. Receive instruction on modifications to

This Burnley & Trowbridge Mini Stays Kit for Your Mini Mannequin has been designed to be used in conjunction with the Burnley and Trowbridge Historical Fashion Workshop Series Online. If you do not have the desire to construct stays by hand, this modern adaptation will allow you to construct this garment (necessary for participation in our online workshops) using machine construction methods, and as little hand construction as possible. with Brooke Welborn & Christina Johnson Eighteenth century mantua-makers produced most women's fitted gowns and jackets by cutting and fitting to the body. One method used in the period was to cut a lining to the figure which could then be used to inform the shape of the desired gown. In this workshop participants will: Learn the foundational principles of cutting to the figure. Practice the process of cutting and fitting shapes on their half sized mannequin (in stays) to deepen their understanding of how to think like a mantua-maker. Focus on English and English Colonial construction based on extant documents with a British or Early American provenance. Complete five pre-recorded units of study during the 6 months course access is available.
