Autistici/Inventati
Autistici/Inventati (A/I) was an Italian hacktivist group that provided Internet communication services for left-wing activists.[1] It was founded in 2001 by members of the anti-globalisation movement and supported Indymedia Italy in reporting on the 27th G8 summit in Genoa that year.[1][2] The collective's email, messaging, videoconferencing and web hosting services were available to users who opposed fascism, militarism, racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia.[3] A/I also operated the online publishing platform NoBlogs.[4]
Protest Against the U.S. Government’s Crackdown on Autistici/Inventati
On Wednesday, August 26, the U.S. government (Department of the Treasury, Department of State) imposed sanctions on “Autistici/Inventati” (hereinafter abbreviated as A/I), a small Internet service provider for a volunteer-run movement in Italy, on suspicion of providing services to terrorist organizations. According to the State Department, it is “an Italy-based extremist group that builds and operates the digital infrastructure for violent Antifa cells and other far-left militants across the world.” The sanctions include the freezing of the organization’s assets under U.S. jurisdiction; prohibiting all U.S. citizens from engaging in transactions with the organization; prohibiting financial institutions and others from conducting transactions with the organization; and prohibiting donations, as well as the provision of funds, goods, or services to the organization.

On August 26, 2026, the United States placed the Italian collective Autistici/Inventati on its terrorism sanctions list, accusing it of providing online services to violent groups. Since 2001 the collective has offered free email, hosting and other tools to activists, and it rejects the accusations entirely. Two days later its website disappeared from the internet — not because the machines were switched off, but because the address that leads people to them stopped working.
Autistici/Inventati case sets a new counterterrorism precedent, Irdi says - Decode39
The U.S. decision targeting Autistici/Inventati should not be read simply as another sanction in Washington’s crackdown on violent extremism. According to Beniamino Irdi, senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund and CEO of Highground, the more significant point lies elsewhere: for the first time, the logic of material support is being applied openly and forcefully to technological infrastructure. The target is no longer only those who carry out an act, but also those who provide the infrastructure that makes it possible. It is a choice that sets a delicate precedent for European allies and for the balance between security, intelligence and legal safeguards.
