The Math of Idle Games, Part I
Originally published October 4, 2016 I’ve given a few talks in the past about the appeal and general mechanics of idle games, but what if you actually wanted to make one? Theory and patterns are nice, but there’s some complicated math running behind it. And how on earth

Prime Time Idle
69❤ 3.8⭐ | by sir_pinski This short (<60 minutes) game is based on an art project I had been planning for a while, and then realized that perhaps an idle game was the way to go instead. It's also an experiment in vibe coding - it's about 98% AI-written code, albeit with me spending a few dozen hours writing the prompts and debugging, and I think turned out pretty well. The game itself is a short-form incremental game that combines math and music to generate a song of epic proportions. Or at least of epic length. You'll see. Currently in a beta build, please share feedback, bugs, etc. Thanks! The Math of Idle Games, Part III

Yet Another Incremental Game But This Time About Coding
95❤ 2.7⭐ | by Poptocrack Yet Another Incremental Game (But This Time About Coding) is an idle clicker where your keyboard is your greatest weapon. Don’t worry, you don’t need to know how to code. Just roll your head on the keys, and watch characters magically appear as your projects take shape. There’s no “The End” (yet), but there’s always more code to generate, more upgrades to unlock, and more progress to chase. Features: Mash keys, spawn code – type anything (or nothing that makes sense) and your code grows. Hire AI assistants – automated helpers who type for you, so you can lean back. Recruit AI uber agents – specialists for one specific task, boosting production even further. Take on client projects – earn rewards by coding for imaginary customers. Unlock upgrades and achievements – keep pushing your efficiency to absurd levels. Idle progress – your AI keeps coding even while you’re away. Light narrative flavor – quirky messages and hints of a bigger mystery add some personality. Whether you’re here for the numbers going up, the absurdity of mashing your keyboard, or the dream of an AI-powered dev empire, this game delivers the core incremental loop fans love.

1. solitude: single-player game loop 2. bottomlessness: infinite scroll 3. speed: instant delivery/gratification 4. teasing: generally satisfactory, never perfect; “maybe the next one is exactly what I want” ↘️ quoting NPR (@npr.org): Taken together, these four features can create a trancelike state that can keep us stuck on social media apps or video games for hours. Children are particularly vulnerable. n.pr/4mH6i6s

I don’t think people realize how much tactical and strategic forethought goes into their daily lives. There’s a whole subconscious time-efficiency layer in our lives. In essence, real-time strategy is our lives.
