arXiv Is Rate Limiting Submissions Because It Can’t Keep up With AI Slop
The academic publisher said submissions have doubled in the past two years and moderators are having a hard time keeping up.

We are seeing a new trend in submissions to @arxiv (and presumably to conferences and journals): Authors submitting papers whose contents they likely do not understand. 1/— Thomas G. Dietterich (@tdietterich) September 13, 2026
Content Moderation - arXiv info
arXiv is a forum for professional members of the scientific community, providing rapid distribution of new research. As part of the service all submissions are subject to moderation. Material submitted to arXiv is expected to be self-contained and of interest, relevance, and value to the disciplines we serve.
arXiv Changes Rules After Getting Spammed With AI-Generated 'Research' Papers
Cornell University’s arXiv will no longer accept Computer Science reviews and position papers.
Whoops! Most arXiv papers contain information never meant to be shared
Passwords, GPS coordinates and private conversations have all been found in the metadata and source files of millions of preprint submissions.
Q&A from the slop trenches – GeoSpatial ML
We reviewed 22 ML conference submissions this summer. Fifteen had fabricated citations, hallucinated authors, or clear LLM slop, so we complain about that a bit, and release the paper references audit we now run.
Fair Moderation, Equitable Access, and AI: arXiv’s Updated Rate Limit Policy
arXiv, and the scientific community at large, are facing a watershed moment. Scholarly publishing is currently changing at a rapid pace, and we are seeing a…

We're excited to be partnering with Anthropic and OpenAI to host the world's first hackathon devoted to research-level mathematics. 40 hours and $2M in compute to solve, understand, and present an open math problem. Applications are live at https://lnkd.in/d79qFQ4s We look forward to seeing you all on October 30 at Caltech! The last IMO problem AI could not solve
1. We—@eduede.bsky.social, @mjcrockett.bsky.social, Kevin Gross, and I—have a new preprint on the arXiv today, based on ideas that emerged during an @sfiscience.bsky.social workshop in November 2024: The unintended consequences of large language models as a labor-augmenting technology in science.

wow — the preprint host, arxiv, is banning authors for a year if they submit papers with hallucinated citations 🤖

I find this unsettling: A new study in #Lancet shows that the number of faux citations in scientific articles is on the rise, and #AI is likely to blame. @aniloza.bsky.social reports. statnews.com/2026/05/07/lancet-study-finds…
