Finally time to drop the thing I've been working on for weeks: Bluesky without Bluesky – I ran a full stack PDS/Relay/AppServer/Client stack using no bluesky code!

Bluesky's AppView performance has not been so great recently, right? Long loading times with "Please check your internet connection" or "rate limit exceeded" Thinking it may be folks off of the Bluesky PDS's. Thought it was android oddities, but I get it on desktop and have heard from others

So here's why we experienced a problem with Eurosky last night 🧵 Our systems (the PDS) were up and running as normal. The issue was that data from our systems stopped flowing into the part of the network (the relay) that lead to the Bluesky app.

When @bsky.app pulls this kind of crap often, whilst also expecting the community to do the heavy-lifting in actually convincing people to try out the AT Protocol... it's really difficult to feel hopeful about the future of Bluesky and its constituents. I imagine many agree with this stance.

The application has remained stable since approximately 9 PM PDT, April 16 despite ongoing Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. We have not seen any evidence of unauthorized access to private user data. We will provide a further update by end of day.

Our team received a report of intermittent app outages at about 11:40pm PDT on April 15, 2026. They worked through the night to mitigate a sophisticated Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, which intensified throughout the day.

The frustrating thing about this is that when you "Login with Bluesky", you're not even actually logging in with Bluesky The App. You may be using a Bluesky PBC-hosted PDS, but it has nothing to do with @bsky.app, other than it's the PDS you're assigned when you create an account on their client.
