Here it is: my crazy summer project to reinvent desktop human-computer interaction. This video examines the benefits and limitations inherent in current mouse-based and window-oriented interfaces, the problems facing other potential solutions, and visualizes my proposal for a completely new way of interacting with desktop computers. Desktop Neo – rethinking the desktop interface for productivity.
The desktop computer hasn’t changed much in the last 30 years. It’s still built on windows, folders and mouse input. But we have changed. We now use smartphones and tablets most of the time, since they are much easier to use.The traditional desktop computer is struggling to adapt the simple interfaces of mobile devices while also keeping its focus on productivity. With people switching to mobile devices for mundane tasks, we have the opportunity to rethink the desktop computer with a focus on getting professional work done.
The Interfaces With Which We Think
The concepts in modern operating systems — apps, windows, desktops, notifications, and so on — have so permeated our understanding of personal computing, it’s hard to imagine anything else, let alone believe there could be anything better.

Anthropic experiments with real-time UI generation on Claude
What do we know so far? "Imagine with Claude" will be released as a temporary demo for certain plans (only Max?). Users will be interacting with a classic desktop UI where windows and apps are managed by the AI itself.

Instrumental interaction: an interaction model for designing post-WIMP user interfaces
Although the power of personal computers has increased 1000-fold over the past 20 years, user interfaces remain essentially the same. Innovations in HCI research, particularly novel interaction techniques, are rarely incorporated into products. In this ...

Exclusive: Meta to start capturing employee mouse movements, keystrokes for AI training data
Meta is installing new tracking software on U.S.-based employees’ computers to capture mouse movements, clicks and keystrokes for use in training its artificial-intelligence models, part of a broad initiative to build AI agents that can perform work tasks autonomously, the company told staffers in internal memos seen by Reuters.

Are we stuck with the same Desktop UX forever? | Ubuntu Summit 25.10
A great talk from @jenson.org on why and how to move the desktop paradigm forward. I especially loved the prototypes/concepts; even if not perfectly refined it’s still nice to see someone put some stakes in the ground. (And FWIW I think they were all pretty solid!)

Thoroughly enjoyed speaking at #UbuntuSummit today. Thank you organizers! I spoke about the need for new foundational #UX improvements to the Desktop UX. Very lively audience! youtube.com/live/WvNgMEumSoA?t=17225s
