Nobody wants another app cluttering their phone—so why does every website keep begging us to install one? The web already perfected the experience: click, load, done. Maybe it’s time we stopped trying to ruin it.
Your ‘App’ Could Have Been a Webpage (so I fixed it for you…)
I was asked to install a mobile app to get access to the itinerary of a trip to Disneyland I'm taking with the kids. Fuck that noise: couldn't it have just been a Web page? An hour of reverse-engineering later, it is, and it's superior in virtually every way to the "app" that it replaces.

Google takes a new approach to native apps with Instant Apps for Android | TechCrunch
Mobile apps often provide a better user experience than browser-based web apps, but you first have to find them, download them, and then try not to forget

Why I switched to Android after 7 years of iOS
Monday of last week I was all excited. I had just gotten the green light to start prototyping a new Progressive Web App for a client I've been working with.
The world isn't ready for Google's Instant Apps
If you’ve been following the tech industry news lately, you might have heard about this new, unlaunched feature that Google presented at I/O this year: Android Instant Apps. According to the limited information released, users will be able to run subsections of a full native app on their phone without having to visit the Play Store once it’s live. Simply put, you click a link and you’re running the native app on your phone. There’s no Play Store page. There’s no "Install" button. There’s no waiting. Just an instant native app experience on Android.

Why Native Apps Really are Doomed: Native Apps are Doomed pt 2
I recently wrote an article called “Native Apps are Doomed.” I was surprised at how many people were defending native apps. In all honesty…

Why did the web take over desktop and not mobile?
TLDR: “make the web do apps” is not a disruptive strategy. It's like surviving The Great Oxidation Event, then saying “make anaerobes do photosynthesis”. Ok, but the blue-green algae got there first, so photosynthesis is no longer asymmetric. It is symmetric competition.

Native Apps Should Be Avoided Whenever Possible — No One's Happy
Why native apps have become privacy liabilities, and why the browser is almost always the better choice.

Turn a website into an app in Safari on iPhone
In Safari on iPhone, get an app-like experience from any website.
The Wix Mobile App, a WordPress Joint
Anyone who knows me knows that I like to try new things — phones, gadgets, apps. Last week I downloaded the new Wix (closed, proprietary, non-open-sourced, non-GPL) mobile app. I’m always intereste…

The Website vs. Web App Dichotomy Doesn't Exist | jakelazaroff.com
A one-dimensional spectrum can't sufficiently capture the tradeoffs involved in web development.

So this is one of the cool things about apps in the Atmosphere. They have to declare what stuff in your account they're going to touch.
ATStore
You find a cool new Atmosphere app. You click sign in. And then... a wall of permission requests you didn't expect. 😬 ATStore fixes that. Every app listing now has a "scopes" badge, tap it to see what the app will request before you ever log in. ⚠️ Requesting dangerous scopes? Get warned.
Hoping @letta.com is still on everyones Radar. They somewhat recently added & then massively expanded support for a local mode. w/ app-server mode it seems like virtually all capabilities they advertise can now be self hosted on your own LLM. The product is insanely good! So happy they did this.
I see talk on here about the public being "platform brained", and a lot of that in my experience comes down to impatience. It's what you see when mainstream apps change layout. People have expectations about how apps are supposed to work, and learning something else is an imposed waste of effort.

My take on the "explaining atproto" discourse is that all the UX/filesystem/etc metaphors are still very verbose and that you can explain the same idea in a lot less words: It separates data from apps, so any app can use data from any other app. That fits in a tweet, with other sentences around it.
@pfrazee.com question. is there a technical reason why social-app forks are not able to quickly launch native apps? We have blacksky and mu and witchsky, yet no alternative social-app native apps. @rude1.blacksky.team I recall you putting out a request for development contributions to put out an app
