Alligator Alcatraz
The former South Florida Detention Facility, nicknamed 'Alligator Alcatraz', temporarily set up at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport inside Big Cypress National Preserve in Ochopee, Florida, United States, is under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security for violations. The Florida Division of Emergency Management detained non-citizens under Immigration and Customs Enforcement authority from July 2025 to June 2026 at an estimated cost of at least US$1.4 billion in no-bid contracts.

Every year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) subjects hundreds of thousands of people to civil immigration detention—a practice that is unjust, inhumane, and completely unnecessary. It does so under a veil of secrecy, sharing only limited, often error-prone statistics with the public. ICE’s failure to regularly release accurate, complete, and accessible data to the public enables it to operate its multi-billion-dollar detention network with impunity and little oversight.

The 81-page report, “‘You Have Arrived in Hell’: Torture and Other Abuses Against Venezuelans in El Salvador’s Mega Prison,” provides a comprehensive account of the treatment of these people in El Salvador. In March and April 2025, the US government sent 252 Venezuelans, including dozens of asylum seekers, to the Center for Terrorism Confinement (Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo, CECOT) mega prison in El Salvador, despite credible reports of serious human rights abuses in El Salvador’s prisons. The Venezuelans were subject to refoulement—being sent to where they would face torture or persecution—arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, inhumane detention conditions and, in some cases, sexual violence.
