Episode #140: Eli Mallon - Streamplace and the future of decentralized video streaming
This week we're joined by Eli Mallon, founder of Streamplace, a decentralized video streaming platform. In this episode we discuss the future of decentralized video streaming, the challenges of building a new platform, and how developers can leverage Streamplace's tools. We also go into Atproto, the decentralized social media network that stream place is built on. - https://stream.place/about - https://techcrunch.com/2025/04/04/beyond-bluesky-these-are-the-apps-building-social-experiences-on-the-at-protocol - https://github.com/iameli - https://www.linkedin.com/in/eli-mallon-5703a94a - https://bsky.app/profile/iame.li - https://www.livepeer.org/ Episode sponsored By WorkOS (https://workos.com) and Mailtrap (https://l.rw.rw/devtools_2) Become a paid subscriber our patreon, spotify, or apple podcasts for the full episode. - https://www.patreon.com/devtoolsfm - https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/devtoolsfm/subscribe - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/devtools-fm/id1566647758 - https://www.youtube.com/@devtoolsfm/membership

Campaign — Free Our Feeds
Launched in January 2025, the campaign set an ambitious target to raise enough funds to back the development of an ecosystem of applications and users for open social media, focused initially on the AT Protocol, which underpins Bluesky. Our funding targets include:
Behold, the official release of my "simultaneously protocol argument and shitpost*" article: How can ATproto communities have credible exit from—that is, "can yeet away"—their hosting platforms? And how do small fuck-ass sites help? essentialrandomness.com/posts/the-concierge-and-the-v… *100/10 endorsement
AT-Communities #1: the Concierge, the Vault, and the Fuck-ass Astro Website – Essential Randomness
www.essentialrandomness.com@jdot.blacksky.team I was messing around w/ making a bridge from atproto to an old p2p social protocol (secure scuttlebutt) and I accidentally ported Blacksky to the Scuttleverse 🐚🦀 ⛵ note: didn't peer so only exists on my phone & will wipe it soon, just a demo! image blobs are broken 😭
Attie feels disconnected from what their user base is going to respond positively to I bet, which makes me wonder if they build things in service to their community or not. With that said, Graze has had (something like) this forever and didn't get the same backlash. That's worth acknowledging.
New from me: Federation Has a European Legal Problem on what the recent Russmedia ruling means for open social protocols like ActivityPub and atproto warning: do not read if you value your sanity connectedplaces.online/federation-has-a-european-leg…
Federation Has a European Legal Problem
connectedplaces.onlineWhen Bluesky does open up and/or federates there will no doubt be an "eternal September"-equivalent rush of folks who won't know/won't care about the standards and practices. The good news is that blocking here is unusually powerful natively and the moderating toolset is increasingly robust.

The dunking thing is a human curse though. If this place grows to be anywhere near as big as its predecessor, I'm convinced we will see that here too. The limited audience plus that's its largely attracting Twitter refugees is what holds that at bay for now.
