Just back from a truly impactful few days at Asilomar for the Brain and Mind, hosted by the brilliant team at BrainMind. The spirit of the 1975 Recombinant DNA Conference felt palpable as we gathered to chart ethical standards for the accelerating field of Neurotech. While our focus was on neuroethics, from investor diligence questions and board-level risk matrices to user/stakeholder engagement and toolkits for neuroentrepreneurs, the key themes shared a powerful parallel with AI Ethics: maintain and enhance human agency, combat misuse and mistrust, and acknowledge that innovation is moving faster than its guardrails. Both fields present novel challenges that demand we adapt our existing frameworks and principles to meet new challenges. At the heart of it all is human agency. Whether we're discussing neurodevices or large language models, our core responsibility as builders, executives, investors, and policymakers is to ensure people are informed, in control, and never burdened to fight for their own empowerment or autonomy. We have the fundamental responsibility to care about the people we serve. This commitment to responsible, human-centric development is fundamental to our work at Inflection AI. We're building with emotional intelligence at the core. Every product decision we make starts with a simple question: does this expand what people can do, or does it quietly shift the burden onto them? AI should work for the humans using it, amplifying judgment, not replacing it. Earning trust through transparency rather than demanding it through dependency. Cognitive Warfare Through the Lens of Critical Neuroscience: Data, Theory, and Values
This study examines cognitive warfare through the lens of critical neuroscience and situates it within peace research as a methodological contribution. Cognitive warfare-understood as the strategic modulation of perception, belief, and decision-making-highlights how the human mind has become a contested domain of contemporary conflict. The weaponization of neuroscience unfolds within sociocultural contexts where empirical findings, theoretical interpretations, and normative commitments are deeply entangled. Drawing on Johan Galtung’s epistemological triad of data, theory, and values, I propose a framework for analyzing cognitive warfare that makes explicit the normative dimensions of neuroscientific knowledge. This perspective highlights not only the weaponization of neuroscience itself, but also of its reputation: exaggerated claims and neuropolitical imaginaries can shape expectations, distort public discourse, and erode trust in science independently of actual technological capabilities. Applying this framework, the study examines resilience and solidarity as two domains in which empirical mechanisms, theoretical interpretations, and normative priors intersect. Cognitive warfare is shown to undermine resilience by destabilizing shared models of reality, while evolutionary and social dynamics demonstrate the long-term advantages of cooperation, reciprocity, and generosity over manipulation and defection. By integrating critical neuroscience with peace research, the article advances an expanded notion of peace as the safeguarding of mental and social autonomy-conditions under which cognition remains free from systematic manipulation and capable of sustaining cooperative forms of life.
Large language memories: Psychosis and antisocial media
Using the fields of memory studies and digital humanities, this article argues that there has been a shift from more collective and social memory to more personalised and individual memory. This shift, it is argued here, can be conceptualised through the psychoanalytic concept of ‘psychosis’. While the causes of the changes in our patterns of memory have been located in capitalist and neoliberal principles, the effects of the changes in our memory habits might be found in psychosis. From falling in love with machinic AI replicas to indulging in conspiracy theories to acting as if we are social media influencers or backing ourselves to win out in impossible job markets, we are inclined towards personal fantasy, often at the expense of participating in social life. But why do we do this? Why is it easier to believe a farfetched conspiracy theory or wild personal dream than it is to participate socially and collectively in the world we live in? Part of the reason, at least, is found in our increasing habitual reliance on new and emergent technologies. Often presented to us as a brand-new form of Artificial Intelligence, these generative tools are the latest update to a longer pattern in our digital world: the trend of developing ‘relationships’ with algorithms that, to larger and smaller degrees, we come to rely on for habits of cognition and recognition. By affecting our patterns of memory, these technologies produce a kind of isolation that lends itself to individual and fantastical – rather than shared and realist – thinking.
