This past August 12th Devine gave this light-hearted talk for Critical Signals 2025, taking place in New Zealand. This talk introduces some old, some new and some eccentric ideas for keeping computers and their software running for as long as we can. It was meant to try and teach tricks to fight planned obsolescence and also build new things that might survive the onslaught of corporate capture. This talk was streamed from aboard a little sailboat adrift somewhere in the Pacific. No prior knowledge of computing required. Permacomputing Update 2021 | viznut
It is now more than a year since I wrote my "early notes" about Permacomputing. At that time, I was not yet aware of anyone else having similar ideas, so I've now decided to write an update that connects my ideas with the existing discussions and activities. I also want to share some new ideas I have been pondering about. This text is about 33K characters / 4900 words long, so allocate your time accordingly.

i gave this talk last night at @southpkcommons about why the personal computing revolution never happened, and what we can do about it. pumped about the feedback afterwards: "it's giving early tumblr", "you guys are like punk apple", "i want more early internet mixtape vibes" pic.twitter.com/0Lwz3CaWBX— ben guo 🏇 (@0thernet) November 6, 2025
