Just tired me, trying the complete onboarding and identity verification flow exactly as a new user would experience it. I had the pleasure of beta testing W Social and its integration with W Identity, exploring the full journey from account creation to verified identity. W Social is a new global social media platform owned, operated and hosted in Europe. 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. 🌍 What you see in the video is my genuine first interaction with the onboarding process. That matters, because onboarding should work for real people under real conditions. Not only when someone has rehearsed every step, already understands the platform or happens to be fully awake and focused. During the test, I looked at the experience from both a user and cybersecurity perspective. • Was the onboarding understandable? • Was the identity verification process clear and proportionate? • Was the relationship between W Social and W Identity easy to understand? • Did the process communicate privacy, security and user control in a meaningful way? • Could a new user complete the journey without needing technical knowledge or additional guidance? W Social is not simply trying to become another social network. It is working towards a trusted global platform centred on real people, privacy, transparency, interoperability and user control. The connection with W Identity provides a way to verify that there is a real human behind an account, while aiming to avoid turning identity into another source of uncontrolled personal data collection. That combination is important. The internet needs more than additional platforms competing for attention. It needs genuine alternatives built around trust, accountability and respect for the people using them. 𝗔 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺. 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗱, 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. I am proud to have contributed during the beta testing and to have been able to provide feedback on the onboarding, identity, privacy and security experience. Watch as a very tired me goes through the onboarding and identity verification flow for the very first time. #WSocial #WIdentity #TrustYourFeed #DigitalIdentity #SocialMedia #Privacy #Cybersecurity #EuropeanTech

[1 media attachment] Good morning Fedi friends. Is anybody curious about how the #WSocial experiment is going? You know, the private, for profit "European answer to X" endorsed by the European Commission, which is a fork of Bluesky and has quietly gone closed-source before its beta launch (à la #TruthSocial)? I've got numbers for you! Nearly two months in, W Social has almost the same number of accounts as #Eurosky... You know, the European fork of Bluesky that does NOT require government IDs to post. W Social: 23.5k accounts Eurosky: 24.8k accounts In order to post on W Social you need to provide your government ID and go through a 13-step verification process. So far 4.5k accounts are verified but only 2036 (as of this morning) have ever published a single post or reply. There is a handy website - https://pdsls.dev - that allows you to monitor the "firehose" of any ATproto-powered PDS. Inspired by @pallenberg and his awesome videos (example: https://mu.social/profile/palle.eurosky.social/post/3mskkqrrc522l) I have been comparing the live activities of the two networks. The difference is SHOCKING. W Social is largely a zombie, dormant network, with a high number of accounts that do not interact. Eurosky by contrast shows very lively activity. The screenshot I grabbed yesterday shows a side-by-side comparison of their firehose over a 27 minute period. W Social had a total of 240 events (follows, likes, posts...) whereas Eurosky registered 7596 events in the same time interval. A couple of days ago I downloaded their PDS and saw that 67,8% of their accounts have 0 follows, 0 followers and 0 posts. That's what I mean when I call it a "zombie network." W Social's CEO says they plan to start monetizing by introducing ads in 2027. WITH THESE NUMBERS?!? Sure Jan. I love how with the transparency of open data you can't really use the standard playbook of CEO hype and hubris. Because we can all see their numbers. And they are BAAAAD. I have been feeling…

I Verified My LinkedIn Identity. Here's What I Actually Handed Over.
I wanted a blue badge on LinkedIn. To get it, I gave a US company my passport, my face, and my biometric data. Then I read the fine print.

#WSocial posted a message on their official account talking about "temporary profile issues" for "some W users." Reality (exposed in my latest article): their network was BRICKED for ALL NEW USERS who joined starting on June 22 (some 3100+ accounts out of 5000) for 7+ days. An amateur reporter and self-hosting newbie (aka me) figured out the problem and the solution, bringing attention to this matter. I had to respond: https://mu.social/profile/elenarossini.com/post/3mpig4ggkpk2q hope others chime in 🤭
A New Form of Verification on Bluesky - Bluesky
We’re introducing a new layer of verification — a user-friendly, easily recognizable badge. Additionally, independent organizations can verify accounts directly through our Trusted Verifiers feature.

W Social – Public Beta Launch
What's verification on the open social web for? With @gui.do and @emily.space we put together a draft statement and roadmap for democratic account verification. For everyone, without IDs. The draft is here, please contribute and comment. Open until 31 May tangled.org/sherif.eurosky.social/atmosph…
It would be great to get some transparency in here. @janlindblad.bsky.social: 1. will users be able to use the w social app with any #atproto account? 2. will users be able to verify themselves (to be able to post) with any atproto account or do you require users to move their accounts to your pds?
I signed up for science with verify later. You can only "explore W" while not verified (no account changes or posting). I then tried to sign in on Mu, just to see what would happen, and it wants WID verification via QR. So it looks like the account is locked behind verification, even off platform.
The thought occurred to me (belatedly) that maybe there are other accounts on the promotional website that aren’t actually on W Social yet. Right now, wsocial.news shows me 4 users who are indeed on W Social and 3 who aren’t: @london.gov.uk, @beate.neos.eu, and @teresaribera.ec.europa.eu.
あ
@london.gov.uk is still on wsocial.news and is still not actually on W Social. It’s been long enough to really make it look like it could be the Greta Thunberg thing all over again Sources: pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:axuvbckddrg7lwlp… blog.elenarossini.com/the-untold-story-about-w-soci…
