“the everything app” is a stupid, hopeless, harmful, no good, toxic, impossible idea “the everything ecosystem” is good, natural, resilient, attractive, sustainable, achievable, and currently within reach thanks to @atproto.com

What is the Atmosphere? · Leaflet Lab Notes
“The Atmosphere is an ecosystem of apps that use Atmosphere accounts. An Atmosphere account exists outside of any single app. It consists of a username and a big folder of all the content and relationships a person has. It's public!Atmosphere apps use this folder to create social experiences like blogging, tweeting, and sharing. Because everything is public, Atmosphere apps can create uniquely seamless experiences between themselves!”
Your ‘App’ Could Have Been a Webpage (so I fixed it for you…)
I was asked to install a mobile app to get access to the itinerary of a trip to Disneyland I'm taking with the kids. Fuck that noise: couldn't it have just been a Web page? An hour of reverse-engineering later, it is, and it's superior in virtually every way to the "app" that it replaces.

Oooh. Just discovered the @atstore.fyi - a directory for all the apps of the Atmosphere. Wow! With user ratings and comments, etc. Note that if you are reading this on Bluesky, you *have* an Atmosphere acct already so can use these apps. atstore.fyi
I saw some talk about "everything apps" and it got me thinking a little bit about it. With the Atmosphere I feel like a really cool part about it is that we can make all of our apps "everything" apps. It's not "my app's data" or "your app's data" anymore. We can color outside the lines.
Every App is an "Everything" App In the Atmosphere
zicklag.leaflet.pubWhy are people talking about an everything app? Also what do you mean by everything? Because the real everything app is the mobile OS. Do we mean a handful of social/information modalities + payments? I mean that’s cool if the ux makes sense and better than separate apps. It’s not “everything”.
Some thoughts on a taxonomy of ATmospheric apps. I see an ecosystem developing with three categories: - Symbionts, tightly coupled with Bsky; - Offshoots, growing large, parallel communities; and - Cuckoos, which scan as skeuomorphic clones on ATproto but go beyond. numergent.com/2026-04/A-taxonomy-of-ATmosph…

atstore.fyiBuilding @skysquare.app, I’ve thought a lot about what the future of the @atproto.com ecosystem might look like, and I’m increasingly excited by the possibilities. Skysquare is a useful demonstration of something that feels much bigger than the application itself—the portability of the ATProto post.
ATProto, by design, refuses to be the place where things happen. Decisions live in apps. Value derives from execution, and execution will demand focus. This is application primacy — and it's why I don't expect an ATmospheric "everything app": numergent.com/2026-05/ATProto-Application-P…
