There was a time when the internet felt like a promise. A place to discover, to connect, to be heard. We did not lose connection. We lost trust. Last December, four founders were having dinner in Stockholm when a post from Elon Musk calling for the end of the European Union appeared on their screens. Their plan was to launch a European social platform in 2027. That evening, they cut the timeline to six months. In June, W Social went live in Brussels. Among its first users: the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Council and the European Central Bank. Ursula von der Leyen. Christine Lagarde. Which creates a problem founder Anna Zeiter describes herself: every W user verifies with a passport and a face scan. So what does a 20-person startup do when the identity of Europe's most powerful people passes through its systems? Her answer, at 23:02, is the most interesting design decision in this episode. Anna is a media lawyer with a PhD in free speech and ten years as data protection officer at eBay. She is also, by her own count, the only woman running a social media platform anywhere. In this hour, she gets into: Why 120,000 people joined the waitlist with no marketing spend, and why she refuses to let them all in. The shareholder clause built to stop an American takeover. What happens to your passport photo seconds after you upload it. Her estimate of how much of X is bots, and what that means for anyone buying ads there. The one kind of AI content she will remove, and the kind she defends. The number she checks every hour. It is not user growth. CHAPTERS 00:00 We lost trust 00:54 Why Europe had no alternative to X 01:40 The Brussels launch 02:25 120,000 signups, zero marketing spend 04:01 The speech that started it, the post that accelerated it 07:01 Announcing W at Davos, before the product existed 09:14 Three things X cannot copy 11:05 The Trend Machine: what Europe is really talking about 14:37 Why she is keeping people out on purpose 18:24 The protocol that lets you leave and take everything 23:02 "Can you imagine me sitting on that database?" 28:21 Getting your followers out of X and LinkedIn 31:40 The clause that blocks an American takeover 33:24 What this actually costs 34:11 The investors she says no to 34:57 The only woman in the room 35:56 What US big tech offered her instead 37:43 15 years of social media: the lessons 38:08 Why captchas are dead 40:52 Selling ads to 100% humans 43:14 Killing the paywall with 50 cent articles 45:12 Hiring from the companies she is challenging 46:17 She paid hackers to break it 49:56 The AI video that could have started a war 54:04 The number she checks every hour 57:30 Why the metaverse failed, and what replaces it 58:55 One thing she asks of Europe Was she right to ship a beta in six months, or did Europe need a finished product? W Social – Public Beta Launch
W Social, public institutions and the theater of European digital sovereignty | Hacker News
And weirdly, there was never a peep about this in the press - while the W Social launch was on national news and a bunch of high-profile EU politicians immediately joined. What's going on here?
Elena Rossini 🌈 (@_elena@mastodon.social)
Do you remember the surprise announcement of a new social network in Davos this past January? Something that promised to be the "first" European social network? Its name is #WSocial and it's a fork of #Bluesky. Its founders have ties with European politicians - but there is no official involvement by the EU. You wouldn't know any of this from media reports because they all rehashed their talking points. So I wrote a post about it, dispelling some myths: https://blog.elenarossini.com/w-social-uncovered-the-reality-behind-the-hype/ #OpenWashing

Attached: 2 images Dear Fedi friends, Apologies for another toot about #WSocial but I am genuinely shaking right now. The @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu and its president Ursula von der Leyen have recently migrated their ATproto (Bluesky) accounts to W Social. I cannot fathom why they would pick a private enterprise whose leaders didn't even have ATproto accounts 3 months ago... and who are so open to having their users' data mined to train European AI models. My articles on them: 🔗 : https://blog.elenarossini.com/tag/w-social/ Wow. Just wow.
W-Social: What does sovereignty mean for social media? – Open Future
The European Commission’s move to W-Social frames it as a European alternative to X, but its closed-source code and reliance on Bluesky’s infrastructure show that sovereign social media requires open infrastructure—not European ownership alone.

What is ‘W,’ Europe’s attempt to replace Elon Musk’s X?
The Swedish-based “W” platform” is the latest in a series of new social media sites vying to replace US Big Tech companies.

W Social, Public Institutions and the Theater of European Digital Sovereignty
European public institutions are betting big on digital sovereignty and open source software. And yet they recently moved their Bluesky accounts to W Social, a private, for profit network owned by Swedish entrepreneurs that has quietly gone closed-source.

[1 media attachment] #WSocial state of the network - September 15th, 2026 There is a lot of misinformation regarding W Social and how active/successful it is. So, from time to time, I'd love to share some numbers. The beauty of #opendata! The network endorsed by the #EuropeanCommission may be the darling of Brussels political circles and European media organizations (who simply rehash PR talking points). But the look behind the curtain is really troubling. As @pallenberg often says, this network is #DOA (dead on arrival). A social media graveyard, or rather, a simple moribund database. There is no way that Zeiter, Rentzhog & co. can start monetizing it in 2027. Numbers from this morning at 10:30am: - Accounts on their PDS: 37,531 - Users with verified ID: 7,492 - Users with 1+ post: 3,388 - Users who have never posted: 34,143 - Users with 0 posts and who follow 0 accounts: 26,444 - % of users with 0 posts, who follow 0 accounts: 70,4% - % of users who have never posted: 90,97% So, whenever you hear someone hyping it up, feel free to forward this post or point people to my articles at https://blog.elenarossini.com/tag/w-social/ The one thing I will give W credit for though is how good they are at lobbying and hyping up their image. While this playbook may have worked in the past, not anymore. On an open network, with open data, it's child's play to expose misrepresentations and show the real, raw data. sources: pdsls.dev, clearsky.app, atproto.at and the csv of their full PDS that I download daily 💁♀️

W Social (@wsocial.eu)
We believe in the need for a global, trusted social media platform owned, run, and hosted in Europe. W is built on verified human users, transparency, privacy, and free speech. https://wsocial.eu/

#WSocial will open up their beta program today… and I have a SCOOP for you: it appears that they have quietly gone closed-source! This is ironic, considering that the @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu just unveiled their Tech Sovereignty Package, emphasizing the importance of #OpenSource. And yet they have migrated their main ATproto accounts to W Social - whose code can no longer be inspected! Fact check: Is the EU launching a social media platform called 'W'?
Viral posts claiming the EU is launching its own social media platform to counter X, in the wake of various scandals, are misleading.

Europe's W Social Bet Tests its Vision of Digital Sovereignty
The European Commission has joined W Social, a closed-source platform. Megan Kirkwood asks what that reveals about Europe's digital sovereignty agenda.

Attached: 1 image This was definitely NOT on my bingo card for this year: European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen taking a moment between G7 meetings to promote the launch of the closed-source, for-profit network #WSocial. 🔗 : https://web.archive.org/web/20260617083436/https://www.linkedin.com/posts/rentzhog_kind-of-cool-to-see-ursula-von-der-leyen-ugcPost-7472769475885461504-hwct/ I fear this may be a harbinger of things to come: MANDATORY AGE VERIFICATION for social media across Europe. I hope I'm wrong on this. #privacy #SurveillanceCapitalism #EUBigTech
European Commission (@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu)
Attached: 1 image A strong Europe needs independent digital spaces. We believe true digital sovereignty thrives on a competitive, contestable, open ecosystem where diverse platforms co-exist. Today, we’re expanding our presence to W, the new social media. By being on W, we want to boost alternatives and support all efforts toward a decentralised web. And we continue to invest into our presence on the Fediverse!
I get the impression that the people at @wsocial.eu haven’t grasped the principle of a free and open social network protocol. They look a bit like venture capitalists turning up at Wikipedia and wondering how they can make a fortune there. Poke @anna.wsocial.eu
