Europäische Alternative W Social: Ist das die ersehnte Lösung?
Mit W Social geht eine neue europäische Alternative zu Elon Musks Netzwerk X an den Start. Ist das die langersehnte Lösung?

Europe's W Social Bet Tests its Vision of Digital Sovereignty
The European Commission has joined W Social, a closed-source platform. Megan Kirkwood asks what that reveals about Europe's digital sovereignty agenda.

W-Social: What does sovereignty mean for social media? – Open Future
The European Commission’s move to W-Social frames it as a European alternative to X, but its closed-source code and reliance on Bluesky’s infrastructure show that sovereign social media requires open infrastructure—not European ownership alone.

EU praises open source for tech sovereignty — then backs W, a private for-profit microblogging platform
To fundamentally understand why it's strange the EU Commission is throwing its weight behind this new for-profit social platform, you need to understand what lies beneath.

LeafPlaza filed a complaint against the European Commission. Here is why. - The LeafPlaza Blog
The high level EU leadership has endorsed W Social publicly. It is also replacing Bluesky as provider in the ATProto space. The choice came without any transparency. LeafPlaza is immediately and directly affected by this decision.
EU Open Source Strategy | Shaping Europe’s digital future
The EU Open Source Strategy is a cornerstone of the Tech Sovereignty package, supporting open source ecosystems across the EU - encouraging the development and uptake of European alternatives.

The Commission announced it will join W social during its beta launch

The European Commission falls for openness theater by working with W Social
The European Commission has moved its profiles to W Social. That's a terrible decision.
Fractured reality
The report examines the evolving impact of digital technologies on European democracy. In an era of a global struggle to control the information space, this report offers critical insights into the fracturing of perceived realities, the rise of the ‘fantasy-industrial complex’, and the systemic risks posed by the attention economy. It exposes how platforms algorithmically prioritise engagement over accuracy, reinforcing ideological echo chambers and amplifying mis- and disinformation that erode democratic resilience. The report highlights how structural incentives and foreign control of the most important players in the information space undermine information integrity, collective knowledge and civic discourse. In response, the report presents a number of recommendations from fostering alternative public spaces and crowd-sourced knowledge systems to reforming business models, restoring user agency, and advancing EU digital sovereignty through decentralised infrastructure
Collection
The “Quit W Social” collection was previously covering both problems with W Social itself and the subject of the European Commission’s endorsement of W Social. I’ve decided to separate the latter because I think it’s more of the EU’s problem than W Social’s
@leafplaza.eu just presented an official complain. Also, setup a whole chain of official follow ups on this complain. We know our rights, no other European ATP project has been giving the advantage W Social received and that goes against Commission Decision (EU) 2024/3083 - Art. 4.
Ursula von der Leyen
Warm Welcome to all followers on W 👌 User friendly 🔓 Open source AT Protocol 🔒 Privacy preserving 🧑🤝🧑 Humans only / No bots And 🇪🇺 European!
If this isn't endorsing a private product, as @thomasregnier.ec.europa.eu claims, why do we have President von der Leyen posting a branded influencer tease video? This was always the risk for tech sovereignty: that it would die from cronyism. linkedin.com/posts/rentzhog_kind-of-cool-t…
Kind of cool to see Ursula von der Leyen warming up the audience for our W launch tomorrow. 😉 Posted between her G7 meetings on Instagram (today). Perfect timing. | Ingmar Rentzhog

Commission accused of promoting European social media platform
Request to: The Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information All documents, papers, communications and other information received by your Authority or Ms. Specht-Riemenschneider in her capacity as Advisory Board Member of W Social. fragdenstaat.de/a/372933
W Social Advisory Board
fragdenstaat.de@leafplaza.eu got an answer. The @ec.europa.eu says our claim about the promotion for @wsocial.eu by several EU leaders is out of scope and asks us to redirect it to the DG CNECT. We will do that, but also we disagree and are escalatinh this matter to the EU Ombudsman.
LeafPlaza • EU-sovereign social platform compatible with the ATP
This is our blog article explaining why @leafplaza.eu filed a complaint against the @ec.europa.eu after their public endorsement of @wsocial.eu and missing transparency in the process. We hope @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu takes this matter seriously. leafplaza.leaflet.pub/3moxlxlfl2s2a
European Commission @ec.europa.eu removed the Bluesky logo from its social links and replaced it with the dubious closed fork of Bluesky called “W” which has privacy issues 😬
Nicolas Hénin
They removed it quickly 😳 Hurry up, let’s have a common logo for all the microblogging apps in the Atmosphere!
Interesting approach by the @ec.europa.eu to just ignore their own scientific service (JRC), which only 8w ago explicitly recommended to support @eurosky.social in this paper: publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu/repository/handle/JRC144603

We have now joined W, a new European social media network. We’re present on 15+ platforms, and are especially happy to join one based in Europe and with the ambition to foster open and safer online conversations. Keep the conversation going - whether from W, Bluesky or other compatible apps.
