Reputations, biases, past controversies. I know about Sankei Shimbun and I have some idea about the national newspapers, but I honestly don’t know anything at all about most local ones. Japan has poor press freedom in general (ranked 62nd out of 180 countries for 2026, and that’s after the ranking went up, not because of improvement in Japan but because other countries’ conditions have worsened)
