Desktop Neo – rethinking the desktop interface for productivity.
The desktop computer hasn’t changed much in the last 30 years. It’s still built on windows, folders and mouse input. But we have changed. We now use smartphones and tablets most of the time, since they are much easier to use.The traditional desktop computer is struggling to adapt the simple interfaces of mobile devices while also keeping its focus on productivity. With people switching to mobile devices for mundane tasks, we have the opportunity to rethink the desktop computer with a focus on getting professional work done.

10/GUI
Here it is: my crazy summer project to reinvent desktop human-computer interaction. This video examines the benefits and limitations inherent in current mouse-based and window-oriented interfaces, the problems facing other potential solutions, and visualizes my proposal for a completely new way of interacting with desktop computers. Apps and programming: two accidental tyrannies
On coding agents, malleable software, and the future of interface invention

As someone interested in providing more agency in our computing environment I am on the lookout for pieces of our current computing environments that can be enriched to provide a more malleable experience. Window management is an area that I keep coming back to given how prevalent the domain is. I will provide a recap of what window management is, how it’s used today, and how modern applications have evolved to deal with current deficiencies. Then I’ll provide a compositional approach for window management to move towards and discuss how I think this could make applications more malleable.

synopsis-04: lobe ui
lobe ui // 2000 undulant interface for genetic music manipulation system. a tool for professional music synthesis, lobe needed a ui that would allow composers and producers to string together very large networks of processing nodes, each with some number of adjustable parameters and each with potential connections to one, two, or three other nodes. because depicting the node network at full detail would require thousands of times more screen space than is available, the ui invents a technique called "local quantized zooming" in which a single node can be caused to fold or unfold levels of detail, thus requiring more or less screen space. the work was also an opportunity to exercise two important interface design principles: (1) transitions between states -- animation -- can be information-bearing and context-preserving; (2) quiet, pseudoperiodic motion can disambiguate relationships that might otherwise be too dense or subtle to apprehend. designed and implemented for seminal music production studio 'tomandandy'. genetic music algorithms by jay hardesty and andy milburn.

List of Physical Visualizations: 1992 – Durrell Bishop's Marble Answering Machine
In 1992, Durrell Bishop, then a student at the Royal College of Art, came up with an original answering machine design that is considered as one of the first tangible user interfaces (TUIs). The machine spits out a marble each time an incoming voice message is recorded. The order of the marbles indicates the order in which the messages arrived. Messages can be played back by putting a marble in a small dent. If the message is for somebody else it can be placed on a small dish to the side that can be labeled with names of different persons. The telephone itself also has a small receptor area for the marbles and by placing a message there, the original caller gets called back. See the video.
