idea: real estate on atproto my dad is a small time local real-estate agent and it sounds like they’re getting absolutely dummied by Zillow et al on SEO, who basically have agents bid to be the person who picks up the phone when someone finds a property they want to buy or rent

I swear to Bast that many people who love ATProto don't realize they are rebuilding directory services. Which could be fine -- I refuse to page through instagram for restaurants menus and hours -- but it's not a value proposition to a normal non-tech business.

Someone recently announced a “restaurant listings/menus on atproto so they can own their own data”, and as someone who used to do engineering for OpenTable, let me tell you that project is not solving a problem that restaurants actually have. Owning your own data is an anti-value prop for many orgs.
Actually I don't think #atproto is about decentralization. It's more about indexing over distributed data. @bsky.app and @tangled.org are actually a centralized service just like general web search engines are. But just like search engines, we don't own your content and this is the important part. 🧵

@masnick.com I’m listening to your interview with @reckless.bsky.social. This third party doctrine is interesting. Do you think that atproto data would be considered properly owned by the account individual? Would be interesting implications if that public data fall under search and seizure rights.

In some ways, atproto, bluesky, @semble.so, @sill.social, @standard.site and so on are building new indexes for the web. I really hope atproto succeeds and goes fully mainstream. Think of the amazing search engines that can be built on such rich index data. Maybe web3 can actually happen.
The ATProto community built a ton of great features and products over the past year. For our next trick, let's mature them into products and businesses.

(2/n) A feature solves one problem well — even delightfully well. But features get copied easily or absorbed into larger products. They have no distribution or adoption model. If your whole thing can become a pane in someone else's app, it's a feature.
if you’re using Bluesky OAuth in your app, change your metadata filepath to /oauth-client-metadata.json to have just your brand domain show up on the authorize screen rather than a suspicious looking url string i think 90% of atproto apps don’t do this, seems to not be documented yet
