@_elena@mastodon.social It seems they are calculating "engagement" which I'm assuming is likes + reposts + comments and then show it as number of comments.

Attached: 1 image 🚨 Important update about my latest #WSocial article 👀 A user on #ATproto cracked the code and came up with a reasonable explanation for the made up number of comments on W Social's homepage. The number next to the speech bubble (comment icon) are an "engagement metric": the sum of boosts and likes. It all makes sense now! https://blog.elenarossini.com/w-social-fictional-metrics-and-the-beauty-of-open-data/ (scroll down to the end of the article for the update)

Bluesky feed engagement — image-count analysis
The left chart tiers authors by actual follower count (at analysis time). The right chart tiers authors by median likes per post — a proxy for effective reach. Interesting divergence: under the follower definition, medium-size accounts show no 4-img penalty; under median-engagement, the pattern is different.

A big chunk of those "likes," "retweets," and "followers" lighting up your Twitter account may not be coming from human hands.

✨New paper out @nature.com ✨ For 8 weeks around the 2024 US election, we randomly assigned 2,000 people to use social media algos we built ourselves. Do engagement-based algorithms amplify intergroup, moral & emotional (IME) content—and does that distort how we see political norms? 🧵🔗 👇
LATEST: on #WSocial's website, comment counts for posts by prominent users are incorrectly displayed, showing artificially elevated numbers. @opfuchs.gay came up with an interesting theory for it.
