We've been doing social media analytics for well over a decade, no other social media platform provided public age data per account like this Facebook has user_birthday but users must authorize the app to read their own data, not of any account! Have we not learned anything from Cambridge Analytica
(@stau.space)
If you want people to stop assuming things about your motives then you should be as clear as possible about your motives and answer the question on everyone's mind: Why is WSocial publishing personal information? Not answering this question will simply lead to more confusion...
DavidB (@david.eurosky.social)
"But why so much hostility?" Because WSocial has been dishonest since day one. The first time I heard of you, it was an ad saying that there was no European social media. Which was your first lie of a long series. "We're building a new social media." Another lie, you're a fork of Bluesky. And so on.

"Why assume the worst about our motives" says while accusing people of being paid by "someone"
Alexandre Plennevaux 🇧🇪🇪🇺 (@pixeline.be)
Interesting point: "The only way to make sense of the European Commission's embrace of WSocial is that maybe it sees it as a trial run for MANDATORY age verification for social media across the European Union." @elenarossini.com
Ricardo J. Méndez (@ricardo.bsky.social)
If WSocial sold people on the idea that everyone they would interact with is ID-verified, then indeed, every single open ATProto community would act as a back door of sorts. The only way for them to deliver would be to de-federate entirely. And it's always a bad idea to bet against openness.
Wimster9030 🇪🇺 🇧🇪 (@wimster9030.wsocial.eu)
@wsocial.eu - I was one of the first to subscribe after Davos, but now I wonder what's the use of WSocial. We had to show our ID to get access, but now it seems there are many backdoors without the need for verification. Maybe I just go back to Mastodon. Nice try, but I feel a little betrayed.
Wimster9030 🇪🇺 🇧🇪 (@wimster9030.wsocial.eu)
I know, Daniel, but that's not the way WSocial "sold" it to us. We could only access trough ID-verification so we know for 100% they are EU and a "real person". That was the whole point. So we went trough that process, but now it seems that the backdoor are the other ATProt platforms to get in too.
Emelia (@thisismissem.social)
Their code was messy to say the least & did things that simply made no sense to do if you want to preserve interoperability. It looked more vibe coded than written by a competent developer. A few of us tried to nudge them in the right direction, and then they went closed source.
Emelia (@thisismissem.social)
It's pretty funny how everyone has seemingly forgotten why W Social went closed source: initially they were open source, and various people from the community looked through their fork of the bluesky codebases, and went "lol wat no".

Warm Welcome to all followers on W 👌 User friendly 🔓 Open source AT Protocol 🔒 Privacy preserving 🧑🤝🧑 Humans only / No bots And 🇪🇺 European!

Hi Jan. Thanks for sharing. Do you believe that the average user will understand fully that their full legal name, nationality and in many cases *real* birth dates and email addresses (We can send you DIDs in private) will be published to the open web, where W cannot retain control?
Interesting approach by the @ec.europa.eu to just ignore their own scientific service (JRC), which only 8w ago explicitly recommended to support @eurosky.social in this paper: publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu/repository/handle/JRC144603
European Commission
We have now joined W, a new European social media network. We’re present on 15+ platforms, and are especially happy to join one based in Europe and with the ambition to foster open and safer online conversations. Keep the conversation going - whether from W, Bluesky or other compatible apps.
Under the 1st option only the name is said to be public. You still publish nationality & birth-year date for those users. Nothing in your privacy notice, your TOS or this screen allows that. @ec.europa.eu & @ad4europe.eurosky.social is this the platform you want to endorse, or time for your own PDS?
W Social
This is not a leak. It is public information all our users have given consent when they verified
even if you're going to do legal identity verification (which sucks!), i don't like that they didn't even attempt to make the user own their own data in their own repo, and make verification only be a record with a strongRef in W's repo. why publish full names and birthdates to W's own repo? wild
Kirsten Fiedler
🤦♀️ #WSocial is posting legal names, nationalities and approx. birthdays of verified users as a public record on the Atmosphere. Confronted, they claim it's "by design" 🤯
@leafplaza.eu got an answer. The @ec.europa.eu says our claim about the promotion for @wsocial.eu by several EU leaders is out of scope and asks us to redirect it to the DG CNECT. We will do that, but also we disagree and are escalatinh this matter to the EU Ombudsman.
LeafPlaza • EU-sovereign social platform compatible with the ATP
This is our blog article explaining why @leafplaza.eu filed a complaint against the @ec.europa.eu after their public endorsement of @wsocial.eu and missing transparency in the process. We hope @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu takes this matter seriously. leafplaza.leaflet.pub/3moxlxlfl2s2a
If this isn't endorsing a private product, as @thomasregnier.ec.europa.eu claims, why do we have President von der Leyen posting a branded influencer tease video? This was always the risk for tech sovereignty: that it would die from cronyism. linkedin.com/posts/rentzhog_kind-of-cool-t…
Kind of cool to see Ursula von der Leyen warming up the audience for our W launch tomorrow. 😉 Posted between her G7 meetings on Instagram (today). Perfect timing. | Ingmar Rentzhog
